RPGs - Any suggestions?

I haven't played an RPG since Bard's Tale on the Apple II, and was wondering what is out there now.

I'm just looking for a game I can play in the mornings for an hour when I finish work, and that will hopefully last a little longer than the recent FPSs I've been playing (though I'm really looking forward to Deus Ex 2).

I'd like something that looks good (gotta put the system to work), lasts a while (I can't afford something that only lasts a week or two at an hour a day), and doesn't require too much knowledge of other games of its type.

I'm sure there's someone out there who can help me...

Check out Neverwinter Nights or Morrowind - do a quick search & you'll find heaps of info on these 2 games.

fruck them two games. Well maybe not Morrowind caue I personally dont like Never Winter Nights but Diablo 2 is good fun for a hack and slash. It doesnt test the machine heaps though.

I guess with what you are asking maybe NWN is a better option becuase you talk to nearly every god damn character in the game and there are heaps of the bastards. It gets so frucken annoying.

well, while they arent new or terribly graphically demanding, i have to say that FF7 and baldurs gate 2 are by far the best RPGs to date.

If you have the system to run it, morrowind is excelent, and has a new expansion just about to be released.

Well, if you're looking forward to Deus Ex 2 then the original might be a good place to start if you haven't already played that.

Otherwise I'd recommend Planescape: Torment.

Baldurs Gate 2 is very good. Very replayable and easily modifiable, with a fair amount of support online. Multiplayer is poor, though.
I cant speak for the recent games.

Baldur's Gate II Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal. BGII has a lot of options as far as the story line goes with many little quests and different paths. The original BG is not bad but it is a little dated in terms of game play and graphics.

Icewind Dale (with Heart of Winter as an expansion) is another offering from Bioware. It is similar to BGII though the main difference is that with IWD, you create (up to) 6-member party to slash and dash. IWD2 has recently been released. I reckon that BGII has a stronger story-line than IWD but I enjoyed playing both games. IWD is more straight forward in terms of the options that can be taken.

Diablo II (expansion Lord of Destruction) is another good RPG game.

See if you can pick up these games (besides IWD2) at your local second-hand store. I reckon that you wouldn't pay more than $30 for each of these titles as they aren't brand spanking new.

I must admit that NWN and Morrowmind looks great and I am thinking of purchasing 'em soon.

I'm a bit of an RPG addict- I love a good story and some meaty character development.
Pick up the following 5 games:

1) Planescape: Torment. Not only is this the best RPG ever, it's one of my favorite games of all time, period. One of the best plots ever in a PC game, fantastic characters, and a wonderful, dark atmosphere. Only play if u like read: there's LOADS of dialouge- though it's got descriptive stuff in it, not just what the character is saying- but the writing is just so excellent, u just have to read it all. Extremely unflexible character creation, but that's the only weakness to the game, and it's only a minor one. Intelligent, fairly epic, party members include a floating skull and a guy permemantly aflame. A modern classic and a must buy. One more thing: the graphics are better than any other Black Isle RPG. More detailed, the characters are bigger.
2) Baldurs Gate 2 plus expansion: Throne of Bhaal. It's HUGE. 200+ hours if u do everything. Cool characters, epic plot, without the cheesy "collect the x parts of the crown/key/etc that keeps the world intact" crap.
3) Fallout 2. Another very large Black Isle RPG. Even darker than Torment, gory, a most excellent experience. Guns and knives, no swords and sorcery here.
4) Diablo 2. Not very story driven (story? what story!)- it's a an action RPG! A lot of cool monsters to kill in pretty, demonic imagery infested surroundings. Gets a bit dull in the 3rd and 4th acts, IMO, but the expansion, Throne of Bhaal makes the slog worth it.
5) Crimsonland. A free game, kind of an RPG, not a clue where u'd find it. Top-down viewpoint, lots of cool guns, something to play when u've got 10 minutes spare and need a break from Torment :).

Other worthy RPGS-
I haven't played any Final Fantasy games (all 10 of them, 9 of 'em on PC), but apparently they rock.
I hear good things about Morrowind, as well.
Try anything else from Black Isle, (Baldurs Gate 1 + expansion : Tales of the Sword Coast, Fallout 1 (Fallout 2's better), etc.), or Wizadry 8 is OK.

Go for morrowind mate its $50 now but you will need a hefty system to run it.

Bullets have a fatal attraction towards me but I dont feel the same way about it.

And no one here has mentioned System Shock 2... Tsk tsk... It's an FPS/RPG, with a fairly good story, and quite possibly one of the freakiest games I have ever played. Have a little look about for it, it should retail abotu $20 now. Note: It is an extremely time consuming game. I spent about... 50 hours on it, and got only about 2/3 of the way through. It's very hard, and has some pretty good twists in it. I really recommend it (can't be bothered explaining too much more, because it'd give too much away about it).

Jimboss: if you're going to give descriptions, make them atleast right, Diablo 2's expansion is Throne of BAAL. And the game /is/ story driven, to a fair enough degree, but it isn't character interaction driven.

Thanks for all those suggestions. I reckon I'll try out Baldur's Gate to start with. I saw it for sale fairly cheaply, with the expansion pack included.

I assume it works on XP...

But there seem like many others I can try as well. Morrowind does sound pretty good. But I'm a cheapskate, so I'll have to wait for it to go on sale somewhere.

Thanks again for all the suggestions - they've all been noted.

ok, in my order of preference, for relatively new games. (2 or 3 years)

King of the Hill: Planescape:Torment
Baldur's Gate Series (1 + 2 and expansions)
Morrowind.
Icewind Dale
NeverWinter Nights

There's a ton of others. NWN was only just on the list. IMHO Its story sucked arse. No where near as immersive as the BG Series, and not a patch on PS:T.

Am I the only one who really wasn't that impressed by NWN? It didn't have the... I dunno, it was missing something Black Isle's previous RPGs have had. I didn't much care for the engine, either- everything looked too much the same. RIP the Infinity Engine.
Actually, fr3nzy, Diablo 2's expansion is Lord of Destruction :) I think we both got confused there, eh.

I must say u havent really RPG'ed if you havent played an iteration of the Fallout series.

Also, I agree about NWN. I bought the game on a mates recommendation and from reading all the rave reviews. I was Extremely dissapointed after having enjoyed BG 1 and 2, at what NWN offered. I promptly uninstalled the game and it sits on my shelf having been played for less than 5 hours :/

Fallout 1 or 2

Well im not much for Realtime RPG..........but i had a look at never winter nights today and i think it would be a top Game......the graphics aare quite nice......i thought warcraft 3 had some nice effects, but the Detail on those dragons is very nice.

Not only that ive seen the level Editor.....and that will give thatgame huge playabilty over time......i think theres like over 1000 diffrent single player games with storylines allready for download.

Im considering it myself, considering i was so let down that Fallout went to a Realtime RPG engine BLAH........i still cant get the taste out.
