I'm after, as the title says, a socket 939 AMD X2 CPU.

Preferable something 3800 or higher.

What do you guys have :) ?

Probably looking to pay about $50pp but willing to negotiate, particularly for the higher models.

don't want to burst your bubble, but these things are the new "socket a 3200+" with regard to desirability

they command silly prices unless you are lucky or persistent in looking

my current 165 was a bargain (thx iamthemaxx), and the second one i just got, now in transit, cost $90pp with the heatpipe hsf.... but they are gaining rather than losing value as the diehards of 939 seek the best bang they can fit

good luck though

i wish i'd bought a truckload last year :-)

I've got a wicked tiny one that is ridiculously sensitive.

I got the last stock of Opteron 165s in Australia ... cost me $286 at the time.

Dual-core socket 939s are not easy to get.

Unfortunately I've noticed this trend on ebay for example.

Not sure why people are after more chips for performance, the jump from say a 3800 to a 4400 isn't that huge :/

I just want it so my puter can work properly, assuming it's my CPU dying :P

(For those interested, I get random crashes, BSODs, strange artifacts even just in windows - this has only happened once or twice though).

They're not worth bothering with.

I was in a similar situation and for a net cost of under 100 bucks more, just got a Core2Duo and new board, and flogged off the old stuff.

You're better off just selling off your board and letting it become someone else's headache.

verily, he speaks well

for the $ you could go dual core amd2 if you're an amd fanbois, or (hiss!) core2duo, but it means new ram and board too

however, if like me you have 4 939 boards and some other sweet items like low latency ddr, it's worth persevering

pity amd pulled the plug on 939; like socket a it is classic gear for overclockers, and still stands up well against low end current stuff... but it is inordinately expensive compared to going new

twice the L2 cache is better, as are opterons versus lesser 939x2's

i'd be suggesting trying a different psu rather than cpu first

and a different gpu as the next step

all else fails there are plenty of single cores doing the forums, and people are more likely to part with them

opty 148, san diegos 3700+ and 4000+ here all do 2800 on lowish overvolt, and in my experience will all do around 2640 on stock volts stable with good cooling

Not to mention the possibility it is your board causing the problems, and not the CPU, in which case you're on the upgrade path anyway.

I'm pretty sure I spotted what you are looking for on eBay in the last couple of days, but you don't wanna know what the asking price is for an X2 4800+.....you could easily pick up a new Core 2 Quad, and it was way more than an E8400 from MSY.

ah, ebay

quote for the 4400+ (only $205 posted :-O ) :
"As development continues, this processor will get faster over time, Windows Vista will also make effective use of it's twin processing capabilities, keeping your system future proof."

better get one - it will apparently get faster as it matures !!!!!
