I've been looking for a place in Aus to buy one, as I want to use my Z5500's in a 5.1 environment (even if it will still be stereo) so would anyone know where to buy one or can suggest an alternative for true 5.1 sound?

Cheers.

Optical?

What device is it for?

It is for a Logitech Z5500 speakers (as stated). The only way I know of actually being able to use all 5.1 channels is by tunneling it through an adapter such as this one- http://computers.pricegrabber.com/cables-adapters/m/13939442/

but I cant find a place in Australia that sells them.

What you need is a 3.5mm to stereo rca plug adapter.

Plug the 3.5mm jack into the socket where green goes on the z5500s and then you have rca inputs!

This wont be true 5.1 sound. But the other adapter you linked wont help there either.

To get true 5.1 from the z5550's you need to use either coaxial, optical or direct analogue. Instead you can use dolby pro logic, it takes a stereo signal and out puts it in 5.1. This can also be used for Playstation 2 and Wii surround sound.
Personally i think it sounds pretty shit. I only have z680's though so the Z5500's might be a bit better.

If you want to listen to music then use the Stereo x2 effect. Sounds the best to my ears.

There are plenty of places that sell the
adapter as well. You could probably get one from any serious electonics store.

Yep. What Boosta said.

I was actually asking what device you're plugging into the speakers, ie. an Xbox, Wii, etc.

Ah ok, my mistake. i have an Xbox 360. I have the picture connected up via HDMI, but dont want the sound coming straight out of the tiny speakers built into the tv.

Personal preference would be the option I suggested over in http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=3&c=13&t=7170

Optical audio, with the
http://www.chadledford.com/?p=50 mod. Quick, effective and cheap.

It's what I use on my X360, running HDMI picture, optical audio to Logitech Z5450 speakers.

A little different, but i'm using my PS3 on HDMI video, and Optical audio straight to the Z-5500D's volume control.

Doesn't the 360 allow you to plug in an HDMI cable and an Optical cable and set up your audio and video separate?

Those pics in hector's link are too blurry to make sense out of when i don't own a 360 to know what to look at. :P

Nah on xbox the optical output isn't built into the actual console. Its built into the a/v plug that you only use for composite/component/vga.

HDMI has a separate port under the normal one but there isnt enough room to plug them both in at once unless you mod an a/v cable to make room or you buy a dongle from microsoft that allows hdmi+optical.

Xbox design really pisses me off sometimes.

Aaah, i see now! Wow, pretty big design flaw then.

Even the PS2 had a separate optical port.

It's not a flaw.

It was designed specifically to drive people to buy an additional cable.
