What do you think is the best beat 'em up of all time? For me its a toss up between SOR2 and TMNT: Turtles in Time. But i'm also rather partial to The Punisher (arcade) and Maximum Carnage :-P

Holy shit this is a great question.

Overall I would say Guardian Heroes. I won't puss out and throw up any honourable mentions. Guardian Heroes gets my vote as the best.

Original arcade TMNT.

And that one where you could spin the joystick to change the direction of the gun. Midnight somethingorother.

Did SoR2 have one of the basic bad guys who had a special move that looked like he was trying to sodomise you?

There were two games at the arcade that got my attention.

TMNT: Turtles in Time and Simpsons Arcade.

I must say though that this is one genre that I am lacking some experience (Back in the day I also enjoyed Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Final Fight and Double Dragon)

Tied between Double Dragon II on NES, and Batman Returns on SNES.

Two of my all time favourite games.

Don't want to sound like I am detracting from the greatness of other games, and most wouldn't count this one in side scrolling beat 'em up but it made my day - way back when.

Barbarian - decapitation before mortal combat.

Then you cant go past the old double dragon

Barbarian at home , Double dragon at the corner store before and after school.

That would be Vendetta, one of my all-time favourites. The queer dudes in the cat outfits who would hump you from behind whilst licking the back of your head.
