index680i thinks:

This is still the same build as the 40GB model just bigger HDD.

Besides I hear they are going to release a 130GB or 180GB models with all the Chrome Trim, Card readers and backwards compatibility ect... Only rumours but this was also a rumour at one stage and look what happened.

In the end though, Still a pretty good deal and worth getting for those that want to buy a PS3 system.

About the Atomic article Don''t buy a PS3

So, for $700 you get 1 controller, and the PS3 still?
For $700 I got a PS3, the bundled sixaxis, a DualShock 3, and a few full price games. The only difference is mine doesn't play AU DVD's.
I still think the price here is far too high for a console.

Not anytime soon, but one day.

An 80GB HDD is just as useless as a 40GB one, and the unit itself is just as crippled.

Fuck that.

Crippled? I'm confused.
But yes, the 80GB HDD isn't anything to get excited about. The change from SixAxis to DS3 is a bonus however, especially given the ridiculous peripheral prices in AU.

2 USB ports instead of 4, no card reader, no backwards compatibility, no SACD, all of which are available with the current NTSC 80GB. I'd rather keep the 40GB drive that just gets replaced anyway and have all the other features of the "premium" console.

I'm not a fan of the PS3. I have a love/hate relationship with Sony.

The title is right, don't buy a PS3.

I spent $1000 on mine a few days after launch and just a month or so after the warranty period, the bluray drive stopped working. I now have a $1000 mp3 player.

besides for the price, a 360 or a wii cant be overlooked.

Fair fair.
I don't really think any of that stuff is of too much value (certainly not to me) but can understand the annoyance of having a superior version being marketed but us still not getting it.

However, the 80GB in the US is again, more expensive than the 40GB and I only saw them bundled with special promotions (MGS 4 launch for example).

So, if your PC DVD drive stops working a month or so after its out of warranty, you're left with an MP3 player? Go and get a quote for the repair of the drive perhaps?

The 'full-featured' PS3 isn't the same price. There are still roughly the same distinctly different SKUs, only now the hard drive size is the same between the 80 gig options. AFAIK the NTSC PS3s will also now have the same SKU options that are both 80 gig.

In all honesty, PS2 functionality and some USB ports was never worth the extra price anyway. The lower SKU was always the best value and now it's also a tad better than it used to be.

I'd love to have PC functionality.
So buy a PS2, they're dirt cheap.

I don't get the care (or need for) backwards compatibility, especially when you take the price of a PS2, or even a second hand PS2 into consideration.

Like dave said, just buy a PS2 if you want to play PS2 games...
