It's weird, When I bought my XB360 pro package, I went to JB on the day it was supposed to be released, 'cos I knew i'd get a better deal than EB. They said, they had them, but they hadn't "thought up a price for them, because they come with two gomes", so I just went to GAME down the arcade and bought it for $537, when EB had it for $570 :D :D ----- No point in mentioning these bats, I thought to myself. Well the reviews have been embargoed and only just starting get released and well...it seems the game isn't that great. Sectus wrote: Here's my impressions of the game: -Graphics looks amazing. The framerate isn't stable all the time, but you can forgive it considering how much is shown at one time. The cities are huuuge. -You CAN jump manually, although you never have a reason to do so. The controls are also actually very easy to get used to. -Animations looks amazing. Very smooth and excellent transitions. Simply watching Altair's walking animation is jawdropping. (although one nitpick is that while most animations looks realistic and smooth, there are other moves which are unfortunately less than realistic... like a few gravity-defying freerunning moves, and the "baseball bat" swordplay) -Running through crowds is a lot of fun, and it's definitely here I think the developers made a gameplay mechanic I hope other games will mimic. Instead of stopping the player to halt, or unrealistically shifting NPCs away as the player bumps into them, the player and NPCs stumble around or collapse as they bump into eachother. Looks great, and makes something as simple as running something you actually have to think about. -Unfortunately, freerunning is the opposite. It's fully automatic except for the direction input (and even that doesn't work so great... it's very context sensitive, so Altair will randomly do things you didn't want him to do, like jump in the wrong direction, wallrun random walls, or hug safe spots instead of entering them). It's a real shame they couldn't add something to the freerunning or climbing which made it more of a challenge. Something is very wrong when running on the ground is more fun and challenging than leaping from rooftop to rooftop. -Don't trust Altair's grab move. The thing is that when Altair grabs someone and throws them, he also moves which is very hard to predict. There's been times I tried to throw someone off a rooftop but I fell down with them. Or in one case Altair fell down but not the guard. Instead of grabbing people I started to run right at them to make them fall, was more amusing that way anyway. -The AI is a mix of impressive and what-the-hell-just-happened. It's definitely impressive they made the AI work at all in such a gigantic dynamic environment, but the AI will occasionally do things which are either really amusing or really annoying. A few oddities I've noticed: -After succeeding to escape from guards on rooftops, the guards started to walk towards their original patrolling routes... they didn't seem very bright as they walked off the rooftop and fell to their death. -While fighting with guards on rooftops, one of them grabbed me and threw me off the building. I landed safely in some hay, and when the guards followed me down they had no idea where I was. Perhaps the guard who threw me was a double agent? -After assassinating someone, I started to walk quietely from the scene without anyone knowing I was the murderer. A random drunkard pushes me and I stumble on a guard. The reaction? Every guard in the city instantly knows I'm the bad guy. -Watching a squad of soldiers stand in an impressive formation and then proceed to throw rocks at me in volleys is a rather interesting sight. -Most times I rescued a citizen from being harassed by guards, he thanked me and then stopped to ponder the guard corpses while saying "Hmm, there's a murderer loose!" -Running away from guards can be a lot of fun. And this is where the freedom of the cities really shines. It can be really exciting trying to spot a place to hide and firgure out how to get there while 10 guards are chasing you. And it's fun to see how the guards try to climb up the rooftops and throw rocks at you as you try to climb. -Unfortunately, most other things you do in the game are not as fun or exciting. I think the developers went a bit overkill with making the game streamlined and casual friendly. Even though the cities are huge and could be used well for exploration, you have a handy map which shows everything you need to do at any time. No exploration needed. There's a bunch of fighting in the game, but it's no more complex than holding down RT to deflect every incoming attack, and then occasionally press X to kill enemies. It's not until the last mission in the game that the fights become difficult, but it becomes dififcult in a frustrating way as the enemies will start to do unblockable attacks you have no idea how to deal with. And as indicated by the trailers, being surrounded by enemies is done hollywood-style. Enemies will be polite and let you deal with them one by one. Prior to each assassination, you need to do a bunch of mini-tasks... which usually range from sitting down on a bench and pressing Y, or walking up to a person and pressing B. And you're forced to do these before every assassination and the exact same tasks repeat themselves. It's not until the very last assassination in the game where the developers actually tried to make the mini-tasks challenging (by putting the NPCs in areas which are guarded or having lots of drunkards around them). Even entering cities repeat themselves in an exact way. Either find a bunch of monks and press A to walk in with them, or randomly assassinate someone (which as easy as walking up to someone and pressing X and then walking away) and then walk through the gate while guards are investigating the corpse. But the biggest disappointment is that even the main assassinations themselves are repetitive and simple. (minor spoiler about the mission structure) You have to enter an area where the target is (the same way as entering a city, only you have the option to freerun on rooftops), then there's some kind of cutscene which shows how evil the target is, then you walk up to the target and stab him (in some missions you're forced to fight guards and chase down the target), then there's a dreamy sequence with the dying target talking about how he's not evil afterall, then every guard becomes hostile and then you run a lot. The bad thing is that EVERY mission is exactly like that, and it allows for no creativity for how to kill the target. If you're expecting something like Hitman you'll be very disappointed. Even though the cities are huge and open, the assassinations themselves are as linear and simple as you could imagine. So, overall I think it can be a fun game at times, but it's dragged down by being hideously easy and repetitive. It's certainly an impressive game which will make you say "Wow" as you do all the stuff for the first time in the game, but the gameplay feels like you're playing a tutorial until the last mission where every guard suddenly decides they'd like to rap*e you constantly. There are more reviews like this also. ----- Smoother than the cream in a twinkie...

Yeah I was a bit sceptical about this after watching the vids, not only because I'm not that fond of the Prince of Persia style anyway. Shame there won't be a demo either, as (somewhat counterintuitively, seeming as it's obviously NOT a sandbox per se) they realised they wouldn't be able to decide where to cut off the player (ie a point or points in the city at which to cut off the demo etc). ----- "Men become civilized, not in proportion to their willingness to believe, but in proportion to their readiness to doubt" -- H.L. Quote by bowlen how can there be a reason to push the date back...its not like they have to work on it a bit more the games have already been made Due to manufacturing and freight difficulties during this time of year, Ubisoft Australia & New Zealand were unable to receive their full allocation of Assassins Creed stock required to fulfill all Day One orders. The game going gold isn't the end of the whole process by any means.
