A revolution for the MMORPG genre.

Greetings all.

I'd like to draw attention to an upcoming MMO(FPS)RPG called Darkfall Online.

After 8 years in development the epic that is Darkfall Online will be entering its public BETA stage shortly. Signups are now being taken at www.darkfallonline.com/beta.

Gameplay trailers:

P1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJSm674ql5s
P2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjFlUa_kJqQ
P3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTwB9LXggGQ
P4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGyXY-_-vaE
P5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQHik5M8Ol0
P6: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkXd9nzLnfw

Darkfall Overview:

No levels, no classes, no zones, no instances, no artificial controls on player actions. In Darkfall you can experience freedom. Freedom to explore every inch of the gigantic hand crafted world which is said to take 8+ hours to cross at normal player running speed with no loading screens and no invisible walls. Freedom to PvP anywhere, anytime, against ANYONE you want. Freedom to form clans and alliances for protection, trade, and socializing. Freedom to build, capture, and/or raze player owned cities and fortresses. Freedom to craft any item ingame using an intricate crafting system. Freedom to learn any skill or spell you want with no hard limits on how much your character can learn. Freedom is the name of the game. More information about the game at www.darkfallonline.com.

Too much to mention but heres some more important points:

-Mounted combat where you ride and strike at will.
-Optimized server technology for massive battles.
-True tactical Warfare where choke points, elevation, and tree lines can be used to your advantage.
-No floating names or radar means that real stealth is possible.
-Swimming and Ocean warfare using player made boats and ships.

Its time to forget about WAR, AOC, WoW, and all the other cookie cutter themepark games. Come try a game where your actions actually make a difference and your time isn't wasted grinding through tedious and repetitive content. Darkfall will blow your F'ing mind.

Regards,
Valroth

For an MMOFPSRPG, it doesn't look too first person.

To be brutally honest, I think it looks boring and out dated.

Maybe I'm being too harsh, but maybe I'm not.

You know what...i'm fucking excited to be quite honest - i just watched this massive 18 minute gameplay video here:
http://games.internode.on.net/filelist.php?filedetails=20270
And to me, it looked like what i had always imagined a mmo should be like, before mmo's like everquest and wow came in and shaped our expectations...here's hoping it's actually FUN ;P

I remember asking on this forum a little while ago about when we could expect an FPS MMO and most point of views was it couldnt be done yet. Well, now its here - finally! Actually relying on a bit of skill and reflex to kill someone, and use *BLOCK!* in real time instead of the usual MMO fighting is something i have been waiting for.

'Twitch' gaming is what will no doubt end up being it's undoing. All the reflexes and skill in the world won't save you when you are limited by your ping (and your opponents) to the server, just like a standard FPS.

Zomg hax I bloxxered that1!11!!!

Of course ping is the main thing that is a worry, but if they've taken the plunge into this area one would hope they will be able to make it work well. I guess we'll found out with the free trial.

After watching the clips from the OP, I won't be playing. I'm not too fond of that style of fantasy. That, and the stilted motion, and style of splatters and effects, I'd find immersion very difficult to achieve.

The stilted motion bothers me especially. Given that promotional videos are likely to be taken under the most favourable circumstances possible, to see that much already makes me wonder how bad it's going to be with the typical half-second ping.

i would like to say in the nicest possible way that this looks remarkably like you are advertising the game and there is a note in the FAQ strongly discouraging that.

this said, i cant seem to find anything saying its going to be subscription based, therefore i cant tell whether this is actually an FAQ violation or not.

however, i would like to flag my stern disapproval that your first post in our fine community is not a friendly joining-in post, but the pimping of a game you may or may not be affiliated with. i find such an act rather offensive, as it would indicate you think of us as potential consumers rather then potential friends.

moving along, the game has a wonderful morrowind-esqe style of graphics (dated and square meshes, yet awesome textures) and thats enough to make me take a look at it, because i prefer that kind of graphics to modern flashy sharp style graphics. ive also found a lack of attention to graphics has a moderate-to-high correlation with attention to gameplay, which can only be a good thing.

I think there are too many of them on the market. Companies tend to want to make them because maybe they make more money because first people can't pirate it and then there is the monthly fee.
