WoW annoyed me. It's addictive to some people, but probably not most. There are plenty of people who play WoW but not so much in which they would skip life for it. That's the radical minority as usual. I couldn't skip through pissing or eating just to play a game. No way. Life isn't worth so little as to substitute it with a game. Perhaps the people who are addicted have little in the way of a life, so they replace it with a virtual reality?

Think of it as a team sport.

Do you go around telling athletes in the Olympics they have no life and should get out more and stop skipping shit just to train?

Unless you actually saw then a bit in person, it doesn't seem appropriate. People that play WoW tend to lead seperate lives between their real world and their guild.

Yeah WoW is addictive, and it's because the game fools you into feeling productive and like you're achieving something, because unlike other games, there are folks around you depending on your efforts. It gives you a group of friends... even when the game is at it's most boring, it still becomes an awesome IRC client. The sad thing is that unless you're lucky, a lot of said WoW friends will rapidly lose interest in you once you quit the game.

The last factor is of course escapism. People obviously these things to ignore problems in their day to day lives.

Sad and amusing, watching how quickly people don't bother talking once one or more of them stop playing.

It's a pretty crap game, but yes it can be addictive. I don't even like the stupid thing but keep playing it. But I think that says more about me than the game though.

Amusing to see just how much people value a friendship versus a game.

I remember a setting in EQ/EQ2 that limited your play time.

Every X-hrs of continuous play it will either stop you from playing or give you a warning/reminder.

I think MMOs should enforce something like that. eg. You've been playing 72hrs non-stop it kicks you out and you can't relog for X amount of time

They're not choosing the game over the friendship, though. Not really. The game brought them together, but it was only fleeting...
