Friday Night TF2

the unlockables aren't a game breaker since they are fairly well balanced. Yet the strategic advent of heaving them as an option definitely puts the achivement server users at a advantage. For example some maps i always go with the normal flame thrower while on others where its easier to route and flank opponents the backburner is better.

I agree with MedicineBaby that it was a bad idea to make them achievement based unlocks. I would gun for the achievements even if they gave no benefits or just cosmetic benefits. As it is the sense of achievement from getting one is just undermined by all the people that got them all after an hour in a achievement server.

You can easily overcome each and every unlockable.
Natashca - ambush from behind, don't get hit. use stickies or the backburner.
the gloves - use range
sandvich - ... just attac kthem?

backburner - watch your back. As you always should regardless.
flare gun - dodge. It's not hard unless you're a heavy who's got his gun spun up.
the awesome axe - It's hard to use to it's advantage unless you're close range. In which case, you're probably screwed anyway as the pypro will probably have the backburner, thus will probably get behind you at some point. Or something.

Medic - The medic's cahievemnts don't hurt you more, they just make it's life better. You dont' really need to overcome them.

It's all about the strategies you use ;)

yeah i got a guest pass as well. but my friends are either non-gamers or already play TF2 with me xD

I think the point isn't that the unlockables have weaknesses. The fact that they are available to some and not others give those who have access to them a tactical advantage.

Dont know if its really an advantage - Just different options available

A Pyro who swaps out their shotty for the Flare gun will find that their mid-range combat is now shit, but they do have the utility of being able to clear out snipers by setting them on fire - Usually not enough to kill them, but makes them move

I dunno - I like the weapons, as it means I can customise my char a little bit more suited towards my taste. As Pyro I used to never use the shotgun, and now I can replace it with something I *do* use and suits me

Then again, I guess being able to tailor my weapon layout to more suit my playstyle is an advantage

Though as people say - If others having these unlockables is such an issue and creates an imbalance, go and spend "an hour" on an achievement server and get them - I know its going to take a lot longer than that though

But there is NOTHING stopping people from going off and getting them - They dont cost money, they're not exactly hard to get (Fuck - Ive got most of them, and I suck shit at this game), they are not hidden or anything and are free to anybody, so I dont get why people are complaining about them

EDIT:

In fact, how many people here dont have them? There are more often than not empty achievement servers floating around, and if you can get a group of two or more intelligent people from here, you should be able to "farm" them pretty damn quickly

If you dont wish to "farm" them and just obtain them as you fluke through the achievements, I admire your choice and wish you the best of luck

Speaking from experience, it's not hard to do. I've gotten all medic and pyro unlockables through playing normally. If you focus on trying to get them while in game it makes it a bit easier (eg, encouraging people to come down and fight you in the water in 2fort for the associated pyro achievement), but all will come in time ifyou play normally.

--edit--
Yes, I has TF2 guest passes. Also for The Ship.

I don't like having to do some of the achievements but I get by without any troubles. I mean, sure someone's got a better gun or health. So what? If you're smart, then you can get by...

Indeed. Consider the Backburner vs Flamethrower. 100% crits from behind is nice if you ambush your opponent or circle strafe, but the compression blast on the Flamethrower can be so ridiculously effective as both an offensive and defensive weapon.

What i was trying to say was that one some maps/matchups the option to switch to a more suitable weapon for the next life is an advantage. For instance if my team doesn't have decent medics I switch to the sandvich. If a map has back doors and alternate paths that let you get behind enemy lines I use the backburner, otherwise i use the normal flamer for frontal assaults.

Its good that they are free, but I'm not sure if it was good to tie them to achievements. Which kinda forces players to use achievement servers if they want that edge and cheapens achievements.

In case you dont know a guess pass is for 3 days (exactly like a free weekend)

Your mates can wait for a freeweekend, which is usually mentioned on here or you can give them a pass.

just remember to activate the pass when u have 3 nights/days/whatever free to use it.

Tf2 is well worth the purchase at $20 US anyway on steam, its running in 5 minutes if your mates give you the GCF files and you pay by Credit Card. Last LAN I had 2 ppl bought a copy.

Flare gun is the only honourable weapon. Real men use the flare gun.

The flare gun is okay, but with the amount of GOOD pyros on the servers these days I'm beginning to go back to the shotgun.
The axtinguisher is great for the lulz.
