Quad Core Q6600 + Gf8800 GTS 2GB RAm - Slow in Serious Sam I and 2

This one has me a bit puzzled, upgrading my gear to a Quad core CPU has booseted performance in everything - except for Serious Sam (which I quite like still). Performance here is really jery - frame rates aren't too bad - but its like it is only reading from the key board every 3 seconds or so.

Anyone else seen this wierd bug?

Updated the games to the latest version? reformatted since new hardware? Try different USB modes...

No

Yes

How does a Uinversal Serial Bus have any connection whatsoever to my gaining perfprmance (no USB i/o peripheals are attached).

I assume this is because you said your keystrokes only register every few seconds but your FPS remains constant. Hence it is possible from your description there is a fault with your keyboard or its interfaces.

What is your exact system specs and what peripherals do you have plugged in?

USB headsets horribly lag many games. An example being Battlefield 2 with a logitech USB headset.

USB peripherals aren't a bottleneck, but sometimes cause problems.

Not to mention some USB hdds and mp3 players can cause systems to boot slow, so I imagine similar things would happen in an OS/Game.

Um but why would USB induced lag only occur after he switched to a core 2 quad. IIRC Serious Sam 2 was suppose to be multicore optimized, so if anything it should get better.

Try switching to another keyboard - maybe a USB one!

Is vsync on? Try disabling it. If your input lag disappears, then you'll need to tweak the "maximum frames to render ahead" setting.

I can't remember if you can change this in the current version of the NVIDIA control panel, so you may need something like RivaTuner from Guru3D.

Default is 3 (surprise!), try setting it to 1. Turn vsync back on and make sure triple buffering is enabled (that can be set from the NVIDIA control panel).

Or you can just turn off vsync if you don't mind the screen tearing.

EDIT: I should also add that Serious Sam supports D3D and OpenGL as renderers (I think), so make sure you're editing the settings for the correct API.

Maybe even try switching renderers in-game?

Months and months on - solved!

The game doesn't like multi cores! So initiate the game, press ctrl-alt-del, go into processes and sort by name, select Serious Sam, Right Click and select Set Affinity, un-tick all but one of the CPUs, go back to the game - it flies!

Weird huh - must be some process intercommunication resource locks happening!

I only posted this in case someone else finds the same problem ages from now and searches for a solution. Now there is probably a way to permanently assign process affinity with a register hack - a simple Google should determine that. But for me - a resolution I am happy with finally!

Cheers all!

lol, so funny, when I first saw this thread again, I thought to myself, I wonder if anyone told him to set the affinity level. Low and Behold, no.

Yeah, I saw the thread title and instantly thought of this answer. Pity I only saw it just now :P

Same thing happened to me in a couple of old games like the first Hitman.
