Best space trading/combat/open ended sim?

So far, I've trialed EVE online, tried to play X3 and got the demo of Freelancer. I'm looking for more suggestions for this type of game.

Here's *my* pro/con list:
1. EVE Online
Pros - Awesome universe. I really feel a part of 3D space even though I'm just a grain of sand in the grand scheme of things.
- I like the graphics. Looks good and runs smooth.
- Has everything I'm looking for in a space game.
Cons - Monthly fee for a game I will most likely end up playing play solo....urgh
- Very slow pace. Slow I can handle, but very slow is crossing the line a bit.

2. X3
Pros - Promises to be a HUGE IN DEPTH game.
- Flying around is easier than point and clicking(in EVE).
- I prefer this style space fighting.
Cons - The supposedly "better" graphics look ordinary to me compared to EVE.
- The game runs like a dog.
- All sectors of space are joined via north, south, east or west to the next sector. No 3D "fly anywhere" space.
- NO TUTORIAL (a crime considering the depth of this game)

3. Freelancer
Pros - Supposed to do everything I want in a space game.
Cons - Far too dated for me to want to get into. Sorry.

Here's one for ya. Even more dated than Freelancer I think, but well worth it!

Independence War 2

Probably the best space/trading/combat game I've played.

I like Freelancer quite a bit... espically online and if you have a friend to play with you, fantastic.

After a while it got a little boring but for a long while it was fairly interesting.

Also by outdated what do you mean? What's wrong with it?

Freespace 2 is one of the best EVER space sims, it is just so supremely good that I consider it to be worthy of being next to Privateer and Frontier Elite 2 in the top 5 best ever space sims.

edit: damn it isnt free anymore, it was about a year ago :( -42

I think he means crapy graphics. Freelancer is old but it looks great...maybe not the ships but planets and space is prety.

IW2 rocks for it's day....still a pinacle of the space combat sim.

I'm getting bogged down in X3 at the moment. Graphics are pretty good, but once you're in a massive sortie it doesn't really make much difference. DON"T buy unless you've got a monster machine though.

I'm running with most setting on medium to run smoothly.

i've been playing X3 for about 3 weeks now and despite its many bugs i'm totally hooked. I FREAKING LOVE THIS GAME!

Initially its really hard to get your head around whats going on but evenutally you start to figure things out....evenutally. I really suggest sticking to X3 as long as possible even have a read of the offical x3 forum.

http://forum2.egosoft.com/index.php?c=2

also make sure you check out the scripts section. They are kinda like firefox extension in that they add extra functionality to the game. There is even a really cool one that sets up a webserver on your computer and allows you to play X3 remotly!

Would you recommend having a joystick for that game? or is it made for mouse and keyboard like freelancer.

X3 is made for mouse & KB

but you can still use a joystick, however i find the mouse and KB to be much easier although lacking in authenticity
