Released earlier this week, check out the press release:
http://www.khronos.org/news/press/releases/khronos_releases_opengl_30_specifications_to_support_l

I haven't read though the standard as yet but there is supposed to be a significant change to the core API. Can't wait to see what is produced with it when it starts to be used.

HMMMM I think the PS3 runs on openGL... I wonder if this will impact the image quality and or the framerates.
Thanks for the Link Yarrago {:)

I belive the PS3 uses a subset of OpenGL with its own customised extentions. I wonder if OpenGL3 would then be utilisated in the next iteration of the PS3?

Who's going to rewrite every game to work with OpenGL 3.0 instead of whatever they're using now?

It doesn't work like that.
But no, I don't see the PS3 getting OpenGL 3, the same way I don't see the 360 getting DX10 or 11.

Aparently unlike DX10, OpenGL 3.0 is backwards compatible to older hardware.

I believe that's because most graphics card drivers that implement the OpenGL interface will automatically use the CPU for anything not supported by the GPU.

So it's just a matter of a driver update...

Of course, if you hit the cpu with graphics work the performance will go to shit, so you wouldn't get the new features, but you'd be able to play anything built on OpenGL 3 reasonably if you disable them.

No spielentwickler it is Backwards compatible with hardware up to about 2 years old, that means it will be properly implemented.
