Most computer stores will build a system to your specifications. Just make a list of desired parts and they'll build it for a small fee.

Yep any computer store will put a system together for anywhere between $40-60 extra.

Hrmmmm. I must be doing something wrong then, if it only takes 10 minutes to build a PC. If you're doing it in 10 minutes, remind me never, ever to buy one from you.

How long does it take to install all the required software again? Definitely more than half an hour.

BTW, when I say build, I mean hardware only. 30 minutes is like a self record. :P

2 hours max for the hardware. ;)

Yep anywhere from a couple of hours to 5 or 6 for the build depending on what is being fitted, how well the case is designed and how fussy I want to be with cable layout etc.
Windows install takes a few hours by itself because I always always do all windows updates and latest driver installs.
If it is a fresh install of my comp then I can say goodbye to at least 8 hours installing everything, configuring it all and restoring all backups and checking they are working. Using a recent image can reduce this to an hour or so.
Disk images FTW.

Putting it together, re-routing the cables is half the fun.
Hell I pull mine apart just so I can have another crack at it, you always do something better or make it tidier.

Besides it's always fun pushing the power button and nothing happens. Why would you want to miss out on that?

Even a quick and nasty build of an machine with integrated everything takes more than 10 minutes. 30 minutes would be a good minimum to screw everything together and get it turned on....

The OS I have down now, an XP install takes me about 20 minutes from a slipstreamed, unattended install CD. After that it's installing a few choice pieces of software and it's OK to go in a pinch.

Normally I like to spend the time it's installing Windows downloading all the latest drivers and getting all the other install CD's lines up. I have created ISO's of most things now so I just grab them off the network which makes things much quicker, in lots of cases the slowest part is typing in the CD-Keys :P

If you do get a shop to build it for you keep in mind that they will give you the most basic service in most cases. Put it together, turn it on, install Windows, drivers off the OEM CD, Default options :S

The first thing I do to most new PC's from Harvey Norman and the like is either to wipe it if possible or to uninstall all the 'value add' crap that comes installed.

Either way I HIGHLY suggest you make a backup of your default system at this point. Make re-building a crashed machine a 15 minute task rather than the few hours you will spend otherwise.

depends entirely on what it is exactly that you're talking about building, and again on what software is required.....

As far as I know the only way to get an Alienware case is to buy the whole overpriced shamozzle.
If you like that style of case then look at the Raidmax range

or the Diabolic Minotaur

2-6 hours for a system build... What do they charge these days? Around $100 a build?

A wise man once said if someone can do it for you for less than your time is worht, pay them. $50/hr down to $17/hr. Any way you look at it, it's not worth the time. Add in that if they do it, you keep your warranty, and it's definitely worth it.

$40 would be quite low, for pure hardware setup id charge $50 at least, and if it took longer than a hour extra. Software id charge $20
