hi I've recently been getting a tonne of spam (like around 100 a day) and the majority of them are the same email, but with different email addresses. I'm using thunderbird and have the spam filter setup so that most of the spam is being picked up. But the problem is that I don't trust these filters as there always tends to be a few important emails that leak through to the spam folder. So I've been manually checking each one (sucks). Is there a way to somehow block the IP that this spam is coming from, so that I never get it? Here's the info from the email (replaced my addy with me@myemail.com): From - Sat Dec 02 12:07:28 2006 X-Account-Key: account4 X-UIDL: UID2706-1145949652 X-Mozilla-Status: 0001 X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000 Return-Path: <Burgundy'sboasters@academy24.com> X-Original-To: me@myemail.com Delivered-To: m5996484@spunkymail-mx3.dreamhost.com Received: from p57AE4489.dip.t-dialin.net (p57AE4489.dip.t-dialin.net [87.174.68.137]) by spunkymail-mx3.dreamhost.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id A40218DC48 for <me@myemail.com>; Fri, 1 Dec 2006 09:37:02 -0800 (PST) Received: from 62.153.210.251 (HELO porsche.academy24.com) by myemail.com with esmtp (493E-06K03L 6.5S7) id I656P8-4H.?AE-P8 for me@myemail.com; Fri, 1 Dec 2006 17:40:24 -0060 From: "OTC Financial network" <Burgundy'sboasters@academy24.com> To: <me@myemail.com> Subject: EQSE News Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2006 17:40:24 -0060 Message-ID: <01c7156f$c7c729e0$6c822ecf@Burgundy'sboasters> X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Office Outlook, Build 11.0.6353 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2905 Thread-Index: Aca6Q4@Q.3;)H?(80<-7.;'?47:WN'== X-Antivirus: AVG for E-mail 7.5.430 [268.15.2/560] Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-2 Alert! Get a new email address is all you can really do, or check with your ISP and see if they can apply a spam filter to your incoming (may cost extra). For a new email addy try to put some non alpha-numeric characters in it, this seems to stop the word generator type spambots from generating your email address. ----- Where's my cow?

Damn, thought so. You'd think by this stage there would be some kind of system in place to cut down the amount of spam going around... like ISPs restricting the amount of email people can send. And if you want to send X number of emails per day you need to get a permit or something. -----

There's SFA you can do so far as addresses goes - it's all spoofed, obviously - I don't think I ever got one of those junk bond GIF mails from the same "server". See if your ISP has spam filters - I recently setup the TPG spam filter (to medium) and it gets most of them (luckily since mine have increased from about 3 to 10 a day). I still have to go into their system though - once a day or so and just ensure that no genuine stuff is in there, then delete the lot. As far as extensions or programs to do it locally - NFI. It should be easy enough. FFS, just something to bin any mail with an embedded .GIF would be sufficient - what sane person ever creates an email with that format picture? -----

I just set a filter up in thunderbird which might ease things a bit. Whenever the email body contains "Projected:" I'm marking it as read and sending it to the junk folder. Since I've got the junk folder only displaying unread emails so I can check them quickly and so thunderbird still has them in there so it can "learn" what is spam etc -----

I get loads of those... SpamAssassin seems to be able to do little with them. Thunderbird misses them... and I end up sending them to the spam mail box. Blocking the IP will do diddley squat -- they're using multiple hosts to send their spam. Likely, it is comprimised user PCs that are doing the dirty work. ----- Stuart Longland (aka. Gmail accounts are bloody excellent for dealing with spam, I get no (by no, I mean zero) unwanted messages in my inbox, and no important emails go into the junk folder. The features in Outlook are really quite poor compared to some other web based email services ----- Core 2 Duo and OCZ RAM don't mix, they have some compatibility problems, to fix it, what you have to do is get a different DDR2 stick and manually input the OCZ specks in BIOS

Get POPFile to use as a local filter: http://getpopfile.org/ It's the best filtering application I've come across, doesn't use a lot of system resources, and is an excellent compliment to your ISP's filtering. One of the best things about POPFile is you can use it to classify what it thinks is spam or not, then use the filtering rules in Thunderbird to sort it into the appropriate folders. This makes scanning for false-positives much easier. There's a tutorial on the POPFile web site that has easy instructions for integrating with T'Bird. You can even set up T'Bird so that you've got one-click access to reclassify an email. (Oh, POPFile is free, too. :) ----- Resident Opera Evangelist...try it, you'll like it. http://www.opera.com/download/ ***** I'm...The Guy Who Broke The Forums. http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=1&c=4&t=2633

I have a public and a private email address, the public one, I leave all over the place, I never get spam, the private one, which I only give to my close friends, has recently been overwhelmed by spam, i guess someone's computer got a virus and leaked it. The spam controls on the mailbox are useless, and I don't want to go to the trouble of setting up a whitelist. ----- Some people are like Slinkies Not really good for anything But they still bring a smile to your face When you push them down a flight of stairs.

It's worth it to be rid of the spam, besides mail washer all ready comes with some rules and picks up the spam off the bat. I don't have an internet connection at home, so i can't use mailwasher, i use my webmail access, and occasionally d/l the messages to Portable Thunderbird on my USB key. I cannot access my mail server through Portable Thunderbird at work through the proxy, so I usually have to go to a public internet access to do it. When I get an internet connection at home, i'll probably setup Mailwasher, it's a program I've used and loved in the past. ----- Some people are like Slinkies Not really good for anything But they still bring a smile to your face When you push them down a flight of stairs.
