Online Store Comparison

Guru

Online stores can be a bit of a shaky ledge to stand on, you know, the prices are a lot better, but you just don't
quite feel right about using them. Here if you would be so kind, I will try and collate a list of online stores, and a general rating for each one. Thus, when we buy, we can have more realistic idea of what kind of service they (we) will receive.

However, NOTE!! The opinions expressed below are not those of atOmic MPC or Haymarket Media. They are the opinions of the individuals by which they are expressed and are not endorsed in any way by atOmic MPC or Haymarket media

So I’ll start us off, the idea here is that if you have used an online store, to post a link, a rating, and a short explanation of why or why not you found them good.

Have ordered twice from this site, both with no dramas at all. Goods arrived 2 days after order on both occasions. They support Direct Deposit which is a bonus for the non credit card holder like myself.

Did a big order with them for around $400 in one hit. Everything went smooth as silk and would order from them in future if they have good prices.

Rex just offers some of the best customer service. I had a HDD failure in august contacted Rex, said send it back, I did. The only down side has been the delay in replacing the part (suppliers not having replacement part), however Rex has answered every email been polite and has updated me on the process of my HDD replacement. Waiting patiently for my new HDD to arrive this week :)

I've alsways found their service to be excellent. Quick to respond to queries via email and always very courteous. I don't mind paying a little more for a product as long as a store looks after its customers. Highly recommend.

Not a bad range, has a few things other stores may be missing. Website design is a little lacking though.

Great customer service with quick response times. Always increasing product range. Haven't had any problems with shipping. Product pricing not as competitive as other retailers, in some cases a bit overpriced. Very reluctant to match prices, if at all.

Purchased the same gear as above (coolPC) and had it in 3 days... only a few dollars per item difference. Great customer service with quick response times. Shipping was prompt and well packed. Have ordered again and will continue to.

Have dealt with these guys on several occasions. I live locally, so sometimes go in, but I mostly order online.
The Staff are extremely helpful, both via emal and on the phone. All the products I have received from them arrive in excellent condition, and their RMA return time is fabulous. I had to return an Aerogate II to them as it was faulty. Granted i dealt with them at store level, but i received a brand new unit within 3 DAYS +1 PCCG!
I have also contacted them about some product price matching, and they price matched down $40 for me :) Great Service, Great Staff, Great Shop. I Highly reccomend PC Case Gear. Nothing like walking away feeling good about shopping somewhere.

Good service, fast shipping and INCREDIBLY good RMA service (Cathode inverter died on a set of cathodes I got for a mate, my set from the same order is perfectly fine.)
Though prices are a little exxy, thus the reason this isn't a 10/10

Have started going down hill. Used to be 9/10. Had problems with my last two orders. Last one I ordered an item the was meant to be in stock but wasn't. Said I'd wait the week for them to get it. Two weeks later I had to chase up the order only to find they had got the item in a week previous but had lost/misplaced my order. Time before that I had a difference delivery address. Invoice turned up without me on the billing address so if I want to RMA there's no evidence that I bought the items. They have some items that cant be bought elsewhere so kind of forced to keep using them.

I love this site. Usually not the cheapest, but they have a good range, their prices include shipping within Australia (for most things) and there's no surcharge for CC. Enter the details and things arrive the next day - I've ordered stuff at 4:50pm and had it on my desk in Adelaide at 9am the next morning. I've ordered about $6000 worth of stuff over about 5-6 orders in the last 2 years, including the complete parts for a system (I didn't get it assembled but they offered to). I've had 1 return that I've needed to do involving some HDDs with a minor firmware fault - even though the manufacturer considered it a non-fault, they happily exchanged them and were quick about it (4 day turnaround from me sending back the drives to getting the replacements). I only look elsewhere these days if they don't have the part.

these guys have a great range, but are generally overpriced. They do include shipping in their prices tho, but that can be a bit of a cheat if you buy several low weight items.

I've brought a lot of stuff through them, not the cheapest to buy from, but if I order something in the morning, It'll be there waiting for me when I get home, or the day, fastest guys I've delt with, Got a DOA CPU and was remedied within a week.

7.5/10
Great service and delivery. Also a really good website layout. They include delivery charges in their prices so it's about as close to a real walk-in shop as an online shop can get. They aren't the cheapest place to shop at, although if you've never used an online store before they're a good place to start.

Have used these guys many many times (a Duron 600 & GF2mx upgrade, right through to my recent AMD 3200+ & 7900gt. Also includes a Logitech G7 mouse, and Pioneer DVD burner in separate purchases). I live over 1000kms from Sydney, and yet, I have never waited longer than 2 working days to receive my gear, which is without fail, packaged in enough bubble wrap and foam bubbles to raise the Titanic.
Customer support and communication from clicking "Confirm Purchase" through to the product/s arriving at your doorstep is impeccable. Also, they do build and burn in your PC if required, and this alone I think is reason enough to buy from them if you're considering a major upgrade.
An unreserved 10/10 for AusPC

I've ordered from them a few times and have nothing but praise. Excellent customer service, quick delivery and still cheap (usually the next cheapest after MSY). The DOA policy of 7 days can be tight if you are out of Sydney but is enforced fairly and they will replace on the spot with no hassle if anything is faulty.

Have used Umart for a few years now, and never had a problem before, except for a delay in orders once or twice. Last order has been a shocker. Was told there would be a 2 day wait to order items in. Waited 1 week and then emailed. Reply email took 2 days and was told i'd be waiting a month. After month I emailed and rang, told it would be in later in the week. Emailed again, took another 2 days for a response, still not in. Emailed again, VERY ANGRILY, still no reply after 2 days. Absolutely useless company. Not the only one in the family who's had issues with them. And not even an Apology from them.

Prices are the pretty much the cheapest anywhere at any given time, however their customer service is terrible.
They constantly don't answer phones or return emails until days later. Normally only have one person serving the line of customers that is heading out the door. I once got a stock check for 4 SATA drives, was advised they had them in stock but when I went to get them they would only let you take two per customer per day! If only they actually mentioned it in the email or on their website.
Their website is pretty damn awful too.

Radius (Brisbane Store)
9/10
The service that I've received from the Morningside store in Brisbane has been exemplary. They always answer the phone, always reply to emails, there is never any long delay in the store and have been very prompt to sort out any small issues that I've encountered with my purchases. If they don't have stock on a particular item they have always let me know immediately that it comes in. Couldn't recommend them more. And as we know they are very hard to beat for price.

Panzerd18

Great prices. If I can, I buy all my stuff at msy. Thank god I have not had an RMA with them as I have heard bad stories. I feel sorry for the employees because it is always so busy and they are really overworked.

Datafast69
9/10
I have found the staff very helpful and knowledgeable, and when I phone during business hours I can get someone on the other end (They have two numbers, if I can't get someone on the first, usually I can get through on the second).

Although they're cheap, that's pretty much what's you're paying for. I went there to just grab a CPU when they just opened. Got there and after waiting 15 mins, they said that they changed policy so that you need to buy a motherboard for the CPU. Nothing was indicated then that you had to do that.

Stock levels, assume almost empty. That's pretty much it and customer support is as friendly as stubborn donkey with a bad temper. Let alone a Victorian jackhole that runs the place.

sexbox

These guys are the cheapest computer shop I've ever come accross. And I don't just mean sale prices, I mean they are goddamned cheap-skates. They sell things cheaper than almost anywhere, but their service aint fantastic. Their servicers are good individually, but there's generally only 1 or 2 there. Also their website is crap-tacular, and it says they have things in stock that they don't have.

It's the kind of place you go if your an absolute price elitist and don't care about any other part of the service experience

OscarG
10/10
Yes they are cheap and no-ones cheaper (pretty much).
If you have ever tried to run a business, keeping costgs down is V. Hard.
Yes you have to queue for 10 minutes.
Yes you are sh!t out of luck if the thing you want is not in a box on the shelf.
But if you know what you want (and most readers of Atomic should) and it means the difference between getting a Geforce 7600 at the haymarket chinatown (and they have good prices already) 10 minutes walk away, and getting a Geforce 7900GT at MSY, then I'm there. thanks MSY!.
If you want to see your printer print out first, go to harvey norman and pay 50% more - your choice.
If you want someone to explain to you what Nforce 4 is, and why you should buy it is go to (just about anywhere else) and pay 40% more.
If you want the best bang for the $450 you have in your hand - go to MSY.
No - I have no affiliation with them.
Yes - Mohawk is technically correct that they don't deliver - so they are not an online store as such - good point, but I am still glad they are there, and an essential resource for PC hardware fiends. - ESSENTIAL!

Reasonable product range and fairly good stock levels. Pricing is a real mixed bag. Some products are quite competitively priced, others are marked up quite highly. Customer service is also inconsistent. I've had times when the staff have been really helpful and friendly, and then there have also been times when they've been dismissive and downright abrupt. Would only now go here if I was in a pinch and couldn't get a specific product from any of my other usual sources.

These guys always seem to have good prices and those extra little services that make them stand out form the crowd. They are eager to help and postage is fast and undamaged on all goods I have ordered from them. Only downside is that they are in Perth, and I find it annoying that sometimes, when they advertise an item before release, they advertise a lower price. (i.e. DFI expert) and then when the item is released, the price gets higher.

Mark84
9.5/10
So what if they're in Perth, postage is good value even if they were in Sydney, and I'm fairly certain I've read somewhere they have warehouses in several Aus capitals. Packages are always well packed. Wide range of products that is continually growing, though don't have many bits and pieces for DIY or modding. Once they even rang me up just to ask what colour LED fan I wanted cause they ran out of the one I wanted. Plus the website is easy to use and looks good. Top marks.

I have dealt with these guys for a while now and only recently have I seen their customer service drop somewhat. I ordered a part from them, noticed a cheaper price elsewhere and asked for a price match which they would have done but the order was already processed.

I asked if it was possible to cancel and re-order but because it would be in my order history it would be rejected. Being a repeat customer with them I was quite disappointed with their service. I could understand if I had never used them before but that was not the case as I have spent lots of my hard earned cash with them and recommending them to family and friends.

This will not stop me from using them as they do offer a great range of products at good prices. Perhaps my next order will see my rating of them improve, I hope so.

iamthemaxx
7/10
Good prices and great bulk deal, but could do with better customer service especially with the bulk deals. It doesn't take much for them to send an email out to bulk deal buyers letting them know the status, expecially since they might have paid a few weeks ago and are still waiting for the stock. I appreciate that bulk means more to ship, but I would like to know that you have received the stock or it is still on route rather than not hearing anything.

contrary to what others have stated, i've had nothing but great service, and fast delivery from these guys... i'd say i've put through about a dozen orders with them, all done fast, no problems with any of them, including a number of price matches, and order changes. fast delivery to tassie is rare, and considering they're a perth retailer, its even more amazing. next day delivery when the order was put through late the previous afternoon? fantastic.

One point for the good prices, but they should be avoided. Absolutely terrible service, deceptive stock levels and they have very poor communication skills and service in general. If for some reason you want something from them on the cheap, call and try to confirm they actually have what you want available, because they lie about their stock a lot, even on the phone, so should really be avoided.

Well I gave them a second chance and they have let me down again, their customer service is deplorable.

3 weeks after DD'g their account and I am still waiting for my part to arrive and I only find out wtf is going on because I sent them an email. Then I find out that the part is coming from overseas which they neglected to tell me.

If you are going to use them, make sure you are either desperate or that they actually have the stock before ordering.

Benq lightscribe DVD burner broke down under warranty, the manager offered to replace with a liteon which is far cheaper comparing to Benq. I refused and they finally offered a partial refund. I accepted, but their account dept never contact me for a refund. After chasing and chasing, I finally processed my refund request via their web. A month later, I am still waiting for the refund.
They deserve "1" because their warranty dept (Melinda) was very helpful giving me instructions about processing the refund. Unfortunately, she hasn't been replying my email since then.
Let me know if you know there are other forums/websites I can post my negative experience to warn off any newcomers.
I will contact them again on Monday (from QLD).
Anyone knows how to make a complain through fair trading across interstates?

I wish I'd come to this forum thread before I ordered a new PC from Nintek.

Basically I ordered a package from their site, a NinDeal, on the 20th October 2006, expecting at most maybe 4 weeks delay, and paid pretty much straight away, to try to speed things along.

It took over 2 months for the PC to be delivered, and that's only after I pushed them, and I'm still waiting (another month has gone by) for the mouse and a copy of Windows OEM to install.

If it takes them 3 months to get a copy of Windows and a mouse for a PC package, then they're not an online store at all, but some kind of carrier pidgeon service, where they've forgotten to feed the pidgeons.

Their online order tracking system is a joke, as dates would constantly change, with parts and software listed with one expected date, that would suddenly switch to Overdue or TBA, until a new date was found. At least watching the dates flicker kept me entertained over the months of waiting.

The only good thing I can say about them, is that when I asked if I could get the PC anytime soon, one of their staff offered to deliver what had been built so far, personally to my door, because of the trouble, and he lived nearby. Not sure what happens if you don't live nearby (Perth).

Had serveral orders with nintek, not one without a problem. I have waited months for an order, which I then cancelled, only to wait another 2 months for a refund. Parts that are apparently in stock aren't, they couldn't figure out which supplier supplied my broken hard drives so I had to wait 2 months for warranty replacements. They even mistaken sent me double of some parts I ordered... twice. Clear indications of a company that knows exactly what it is doing. I no longer order from nintek, and I don't recommend them.

Reasonable range, very good customer service and response time. Products arrived packaged well. Have had a missing item on my order, but this has been followed up and will be sent when in stock. Therefore follow up with customer orders has been great. Products arrive on time. VERY competitive pricing, have not only matched but
have done better pricing on competitors already on special items. Would happily deal with this retailer again.

After reading what you've said, it's sounding all too familiar. Most of their service wasn't too bad for me, but now it seems that I'm not just the only one waiting on parts to arrive that they don't have in stock >_> Two Aluminium Mesh Fan Grills that i paid for (they were around $3.50 each so I wasn't complaining TOO much) were missed on my delivery. I was told that they re-posted them for me. Never arrived. Followed it up and they confirmed that it was lost in postage. The last I contacted Stefan I was told that they were still waiting on an AC Ryan Shipment. Meanwhile I have a hole in the top of my case where these Square Silver Mesh grills are supposed to go for several month now! It wouldn't be SO bad if they had contacted me and kept me informed, but I'm sorry this isn't service!

I would like to lower my rating of www.coolpc.com.au to a 5/10 as I am now realising that it is not just me who has had the same problem!

I ordered a bunch of cables, a temp monitor faceplate, a UV cold cathode etc on the 2nd of Jan, knowing I'd have to wait till the 15th before they'd even see it. No biggie, I'm a fairly patient man. I hear nothing from them by end of Jan, so I email. I get this Stefan guy, who says "we can't get two of the items you ordered currently, should be 2 weeks, do you want to wait for them or send what we can get and get you a refund." I said, it's ok, I'll wait. Another month rolls by, nothing from Cool-PC. I email again. Get much the same reply, so I continue waiting. Each month that goes by I enquire, as they don't volunteer any info, get much the same thing. After FIVE FREAKIN MONTHS I've had enough. Send what you do have, refund for the rest I say. I get an email back the same day, saying they now have NONE of the items in stock, and their sorry. SORRY? WTF didn't they have my order set aside? They've had my money for 5 months, so those items belonged to me. Why weren’t they off the shelves? Why were they sold to other people? Just what sort of business is this guy running? Hell I wanted to purchase from these guys but COULDN'T. They had my money for 5 months but couldn't put the parts they did have aside? Seems others have successfully purchased from them, perhaps they have something against me?

Ordered around $100 worth of case modding gear. Got an email saying that some of the parts were not in stock and there would be a 2 week wait max. The website said that the stock usually ships within 24hrs however they had no stock. I told them I could wait for 2 weeks and have it shipped together as I already paid direct deposit for it all. 2 weeks go by and nothing, I send another email and get it will be another week. Another week goes by and I send an email and again it will come soon answer. 1 month went by and nothing from coolpc. I send another email and they tell me that it is coming in a week and its nearly here. Another week goes by and I ask for a refund because of all the stuffing around I had to do. After telling me 2 weeks max it turns into 2 months and counting.

I've been buying from these guys for 10 years now, ever since my cod order went missing back in 96 and the guy who ran the place at the time drove across town to hand deliver me another one. Now THAT is service (it was a voodoo graphics card and it was the Friday before a long weekend... I was wrapped!). The other one did turn up, it had been mailed to my home address instead of my work address, which I had specified. I was so happy with them I picked it up and offloaded it to a friend. Prices are often competitive, but not always. Stock levels and turnaround time for what I've ordered over the years has been good. Never received a DOA or badly packaged item from them, you can go and pick up yourself if so inclined. Will keep buying from them.

these guys are in Artarmon in Sydney. Their prices were quite competitive back a few years ago with good range, but now they tend to stick to the mid-range gear. VERY quick response time and excellent customer service. Products arrived sooner than expected. Excellent product range for their niche market. Very knowledgeable with lots of review, testing and information available on their website. Prices are comparable to like products with lots of options available (eg. single pass and dual pass radiators in each size). Will definitely be happy to deal with this retailer again!

Nice website, tells you if the item is in stock, good communication with customers (I received an email within minutes of placing an order when there was going to be a delay with the order and asking what I would like to do), nice chat feature, quick delivery, good packaging, prices usually on par with everyone else. USA based company that charges postage based on what it actually costs them to ship (rather than the usual blanket US$60 to ship 1 chip). Huge warehouses, good prices. If it is sold in the USA and not in Oz give them a go. Stuff takes a while to arrive, make sure you send it via US post (USPS GEM so you can track it). Many other USA stores send via courier (FedEx, UPS) which attracts more customs $

Another USA shop that is the world's biggest camera, video, audio seller. Good mail service, even to Oz, though getting them to accept your credit card initially is a test of endurance and stamina. Again, use USPS GEM service rather than a courier (FedEx or UPS) if you can. I have only had stuff delivered from them in the USA but have seen lots of good reports from Australians. Be warned that many warranties don't work outside the USA, or require the product to be shipped back to the USA.

Need a networking product? These are the guys to go to for wireless, modems, routers, etc. I've bought two ADSL modems and one router from them. Excellent service, the best price on networking hardware, and flat-rate shipping.

Granted I haven't bought anything from them yet but they take forever to get a deal going. Possibly due to the sheer numbers required to get a sizable discount happening and not huge amounts of people browsing the site. Most of the deals seem to be there more cause the company is pushing it, or possibly spare stock rather than by popular demand.
That's just what I think though.

Good prices and great bulk deal, but could do with better customer service especially with the bulk deals. It doesn't take much for them to send an email out to bulk deal buyers letting them know the status, especially since they might have paid a few weeks ago and are still waiting for the stock. I appreciate that bulk means more to ship, but I would like to know that you have received the stock or it is still on route rather than not hearing anything.

Bought stuff off them a couple of times.
First time received my stuff next day after they received payment. Not bad from Melbourne to Central West NSW.

Second time there was a slight delay for them getting something in.
So they asked me if I was happy for them to ship what they had off to me and then ship the rest as soon as it got in at no extra charge.
I can’t complain about that service.

And last time I ordered something off them I again received it the next day after they received payment.

They have always answered their phones straight away. And rung me back when they said they would.

Average Pricing - sometimes some OK deals. Service was fast (picked up in store) although the guy pretty much threw the ram across the bench at me. I wouldn't have bouth here except that:

The only store that I trust the most. Very competitive rates. Tell Fast Eddie about something lower than his advertised price and he'll either match it or sweeten the deal a bit. Always has stock regardless of what you want and if they don't have it, they'll hold off an order for you to send out free.

Great DOA and RMA replacement if they don't have your item in stock.

These guys rock. Used them as a supplier where I use to work. Super-fast shipping and uber-service.

Example from late last year.

December 19th 2005: 11.30am

NSW Police DEMO (District Emergency Management Officer) walks in whom I happen to know quite well. As it turns out their computers are going to be upgraded over the next week while they are all away.

The problem being their IT Team didn't send out the USB HDD for them to back everything up to.

Solution: I have some in stock
Problem: They need a 500Gb which I don't have in stock

So i jump on the phone to Synnex, turns out they have 1x 500Gb USB HDD in stock - by this stage a Purchase Order is being madly typed out by me and thrown through the fax machine. The Synnex guy says we might have it before christmas otherwise it'll be in the new year that we recieve it.

Problem: the DEMO needs it within 2 days.
Solution: I tell the guy we need it for NSW Police ASAP. To which he adds a few comments to the order.

I wander up to our recieving dock and what just happens to turn up. Yep the USB HDD. 23hrs from the time the P/O was sent to the time we recieved it. Not to mention only 5 days out from Chrismas too!
23hrs includes the damn thing being sent Interstate (VIC) Warehouse to Goulburn (Regional NSW).

Synnex IMO are bloody legends.

RA's are just as easy through them. Every time I've had to send something back it was less than a 5 minute phonecall and I had the RA Authorisation.

I purchased a complete computer (xp1800 + GF5900) from these guys for Mum at home. Nothing but trouble, unfortunately, but I hesitate to condemn them as they did do their utmost to fix the trouble. However, the demeanor over the phone left a bit to be desired for my not completely literate Mother.

Bodgy RAM shipped with the PC in the first event, as they had not done a proper burn in. This is an issue when you live in the NW of NSW, where any courier takes around 7 working days to deliver anything, so it's a fortnight turn around if there is an issue. Also, the PC case arrived in less than perfect condition.

Have only bought a few items from here, including my Hercules xp-210 speaker set, which blew up 6 months after buying it. However, this is not techbuy's fault, and after I lodged a return enquiry with them, and sent the speakers back, I received an entirely new speaker set within 10 working days, again to my home in NW NSW.

I also purchased a brand new total P4 + Radeon 8500 system from them when these things were new. We botched the P4 installation, (accidentally scraped that thermal patch off the heatsink), but they accepted the return and replaced it no worries, and in minimal time too.

However, I find their customer support and communication is not awe-inspiring, and when email is the primary form of communication when buying online, this is enough to make me look elsewhere these days. Still...

9.5/10 for PCCG
I've always found their service to be excellent. Quick to respond to queries via email and always very courteous. I don't mind paying a little more for a product as long as a store looks after its customers. Highly recommend.

6.5/10 for Scorpion Technology
Reasonable product range and fairly good stock levels. Pricing is a real mixed bag. Some products are quite competitively priced, others are marked up quite highly. Customer service is also inconsistent. I've had times when the staff have been really helpful and friendly, and then there have also been times when they've been dismissive and downright abrupt. Would only now go here if I was in a pinch and couldn't get a specific product from any of my other usual sources.

EDIT: Great thread Shikimaru. If the store review numbers start growing, + for sticky

Prices are the pretty much the cheapest anywhere at any given time, however their customer service is terrible.
They constantly don't answer phones or return emails until days later. Normally only have one person serving the line of customers that is heading out the door. So what if they're in Perth, postage is good value even if they were in Sydney, and I'm fairly certain I've read somewhere they have warehouses in several Aus capitals. Packages are always well packed. Wide range of products that is continually growing, though don't have many bits and pieces for DIY or modding. That's the trouble with stores that have many different outlets.

My Opinion of the Morningside store 9/10

May I make a suggestion about how you are editing the main post.

Possibly have a list of stores, then a Vote system +1 or -1 etc...

For each store, it has a system of good votes or bad votes... There's really no need to update it with everyones reasons why they like the store etc..

that's true, though i like to get some experiences when i get the vote, so that it's not just a vote...and so that people making a decision will be able to read the experinces, and then even if it has a high or low vote, decide whether they are going to use the service

Also I do not belive that MSY should be in the list as they are not an online store.

Great customer service with quick response times. Always increasing product range. Haven't had any problems with shipping. Product pricing not as competitive as other retailers, in some cases a bit overpriced. Very reluctant to match prices, if at all.

VERY quick response time and excellent customer service. Products arrived sooner than expected. Excellent product range for their niche market. Very knowledgable with lots of review, testing and information available on their website. Prices are comparable to like products with lots of options available (eg. single pass and dual pass radiators in each size). Will definitely be happy to deal with this retailer again!

Use this retailer as a supplier at work. Good pricing, good friendly customer service. Products arrive well packaged. Haven't had any dramas with this supplier/retailer.
