Which is currently the best Anti-Spam software ?

Howdy,

For many years now, I have been quite content with creating filter rules in OE to avoid a SPAM overdose.

However, the spamming today has gotten so bad, that I'm now sick to death of regularly updating my filter rules, only to to achieve a 30-40% success rate !

There's an absolute shite load of spam blocking aplications out there nowadays, but because I've never looked into it, I have no idea where to start.

Could somebody please suggest which are the best free spam blockers out there?

Anybody who makes a dumb arsed comment like in Oreste's post, will likewise be ignored.

Those email addresses now only exist, as spamtraps. Why? Because I got sick of the double-bounces. Prior to this influx of spam, the accounts did not exist. This is the first time I've revealed these accounts... Are you going to tell me they've got a time machine of some sort, and could predict that I'd be posting this exact message now? (Ignoring the nonsensical timestamp on some of these emails)

Don't think that "not giving out your email address" will save you... there are arseholes out there who will try anything... literally. ;-)

Unfortunately, everytime one sends an email, they efectively risk giving out their email address to strangers.

Let's say u email a funny to a friend.
He/she finds it so hilarious, they forward your email to a dozen of their friends, without 1st the removing the :

Now, all 12 of those fiends of friends have your email address!

Worse yet, if those people all find it so funny that they then each forward it to another 3 people, then that's 48 people that now potentially have your email address recorded on their PCs..

Given the statistics on internet security, most of these 48 recipients of your email address, will have no form of spyware protection in place, & most of them will use only the crappy wniblows firewall, & there goes your email address into the wild blue yonder.

So much for not giving out your email address! lol

POPFile is my spamkiller-of-choice. Get it here:
http://getpopfile.org/

Like any good spam filter, you need to spend a bit of time 'training' it, but once it's working you'll find it's excellent. I've been using it for three years now and it's filtered near 120k e-mails with less than a thousand errors (856, to be exact). That's a 99.27% accuracy rate.

It's also completely free (both no $$ and open-source) so there's no nagging for payment.

Ok, so there are 2 contenders on the table;
Spam Assassin (thanks Johnsee),
&
POPFile (thanks Chazzozz!).

So has anybody had experience with both of these progys, & if so, which did u find better over all ?

By having posted this thread I guess it's not exactly unsolicited (thus not technically SPAM), but would u believe that sombody signed up as a member here just so that they could send me a PM offering commercial SPAM blocking solutions for money !!!

Un-fucking-believable!

Johnsee,
I just looked up SpamAssassin, & it appears that there is no version to Suit WindowsXP ?
In fact, it appears to be aimed at servers rather than desktops.

To make my self clear, I am looking for a Stand-alone spam solution, for desktop computers running WinXP with OE.
Anybody have any other suggestions ?

Well, at the sake of repeating myself, I suggest you give POPFile a try. It's standalone, will work on XP, and there's an excellent Quick Start guide that covers installation and setup:

http://popfile.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?QuickStart

and how to set it up with popular e-mail clients (including OE):

Thanks again, but I heard (& Thanked) you the 1st time (See my 3rd last post).

Infact, I'm in the process of downloading POPFile as we speak.
The thing is, I'm not 1 to install & uninstall software on a whim. I like to research each option & evaluate them as best as I can b4 actually installing anything.

So when in my last post I asked if anybody had any other suggestions, I guess seeing as POPFile was already under consideration, I probably shoulda said "Anybody other than Chazzozz".

Sorry for not being clearer, & thanks again for the suggestion.

Now to anybody else, I find it hard to believe that there are no other alternatives to POPFile, so are there any other suggestions.

Without a doubt the best program for removing spam is fdisk.

I like spambully.

its effective bayesian filtering seems to work and i really like the "learn as spam, bounce, punish and add domain to spammers list" option. There's something about the concept of 'punishing' a spammer that invokes mental spanking images.
