Explorer.exe not loading

Yeah well, for some reason explorer.exe is not loading properly when I log on. It says it's there, under processes, but there is no GUI...?
Can I copy the explorer.exe file from a friends HDD and overwrite my screwed one? Or will this just make shit smell worse?

You could try it, but I doubt that it will resolve the problem.

Alternatively try ALT-CTRL-DEL and File-> new task and type 'explorer'

See if it comes up.

I haven't tyried that, but I don't think it will open. No files or programs open. I can only use Task Manager and CLI, but CLI will not open anything.
Can I repair my explorer.exe file in the Repair Console by booting from the Windows Setup Disk?

It might be a start to run windows repair, but be warned that it will also replace any system files that you've changed. Like me, I've done some stuff with a lot of my system files which I didn't do /Taps nose

IF you're running XP/NT, then open up regedit and navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
MICROSOFT
Windows NT
CurrentVersion
Winlogon

And make sure that the Shell Key only says "Explorer.exe"
I'm not sure if this will help, but I have had problems where this went missing.

provided he can get into regedit aimbot

i suggest
plug the drive into your mates pc as the slave but make sure he has updated his antivirus 1st
let your mates operating system boot it not yours
then copy any data you havent backed up.

you can`t get it back by copying it from a mates pc cos his explorer would be in use. your best off getting it from the CD.
you can also try the repair that should also work but the last time(s) i did things like that at work (for pcs were formatting wasnt really and option) its always been a bit flakey and there is a good chance windows will be a bit touch and go as some other files need to be configured on a per pc basis
(like boot.ini for e.g)
cos i am thinking if explorer is being gay at the moment i am thinking other files will also be gay

if that doesnt work
then format and reinstall
at least you will have a backup of your data
sorry dude but explorer and other files are is pretty important.
you`ll save time and lots of fucking around

I've seen this problem a couple of times.

Generally it is a dummy Explorer.exe.

Instead of being in the normal C:\Windows it places itself in the C:\Windows\System32 location. Both are "path" directories so when windows goes to load explorer it doesn't bother specifying C:\windows. So the dummy one in C:\windows\system32 gets preference.

Check you don't have an extra explorer.exe in other "path" directories like c:\windows\system32.

Please spyder, make it stop.

EDIT: He should be able to open regedit if he can bring up taskmanager.

Umm...yeah, not helpful

Can you use the task manager to open a command prompt? If you can (and you have your windows cd handy) try typing:

sfc /scannow

that *may* help, as it will check all the windows system files and replace the ones it can't find/have been modified.

Failing that, backing up data and a format would be the best option, as was mentioned
