i wish to watch dvd's through my tv using the tv out. problem is, i have this 'macrovision' to contend with.

for those of you that don't know, macrovision is copy protection thingy that stops dvd's from playing whenever the tv-out is enabled.

anybody got any ideas?

macrovision is copy protection?!

I overheard a salesman at HN telling some people that it 'enhances the image on the screen'.

Had to bite my tounge

Not always, but generally speaking (puts on flame proof suit) salesmen are dickheads that would be otherwise unemployable.
Especially when it comes to even slightly technical toys. So why are you surprised ?

Macrovision adds spike to the video signal that is enough to upset the sensitive record heads on video recorders. Hardware filters are available from Dick Smith so you can make clean backups of your favourite videos and or DVD's.

Yeh i've seen them in the jaycar catalogue. They say its just image enhancements. I wonder how their able to get away with it? its obviously macrovision.

Because it really is image enhacement & therefore they are not false advertising.
If you happen to know that a side benefit is the removal of macrovision signals then thats your good luck.

Hitokiwi
I doubt it. You might find someone who has writtena filter for it though. Research video filter programs for cleaning up old stuff or something.

Dansdata.com in one of his letters column tells about the removal of Macrovision by those image enhancers box. AFAIK they arent to expensive either. But then again i have never really looked into it.

Of course, this is of absolutely no use to you, bur I just thought I'd throw it in anyway. An RGB signal sent down a SCART cable (or, I assume, any other cable for that matter) doesn't have any Macrovision crap.

Like I said, doesn't help you...

tvtool does remove macrovision from your tv-out.

http://tvtool.info/index_e.htm

it is not free (10 euros or roughly AUD$20) but you get free updates included.
