im building my first pc, i was gonna go with sumthing like this, maybee diff case, sot sure yet. lemme know what you think. Asus A7V333 VIA KT333 ATA/133 3xDDR DIMMs OEM AMD Athlon XP 2400+(2.0GHz/266FSB/256K) Socket heatsink/fan (1GHz-1.7GHz) (2x) 256MB DDR266 CL3 PC2100 OEM SDRAM Teac 3½ 1.44MB FDD Seagate 80GB 9.5ms 7200rpm ATA/100 2MB ATI RADEON 9800 PRO 128MB DDR AGP8X OEM Benq V772 17/16.27mm 1280NI Max OSD BenQ CRW-5224P 52X/24X/52X ATAPI ReWriter Toshiba SD-M1712 16X DVD / 48X CD-ROM 128KB Creative Sound Blaster Live! PCI OEM/Bulk US Robotics 56K Performance Pro Internal 3Com 10/100 PCI 3C905CX-TX-M w/WOL OEM Scorpio Black A668W Aluminum Tower w/420W PS Logitech Internet Keyboard OEM Logitech MX300 Optical Wheel Mouse USB/PS2 4-button Microsoft OEM Windows XP Professional Edition this has already been suggested but yeh get the A7N8X (you won't need to buy a sound card, it already has a kick ass on-board) instead of the A7V333 - Lite-On instead of BenQ - Barton 2500+ (fsb333) instead of 2400+(fsb266) - DDR400(same price, but good for future upgrading) instead of DDR266 - US Robotics is a great company for modems, but you could get a cheaper generic modem instead - HAL9000 is right about the 420w, it's just overkill. 300w is good enough - unless you're planning on overclocking, you don't really need the Socket heatsink/fan, the AMD cpu has good enough fan -----

Do you want to overclock? What brand of RAM is it? Why don't you get a hard drive with 8MB cache if you can afford it? I'd definately upgrade the RAM though. ----- Email: virul_atomic@yahoo.com.au Video Card Pricewatch V2: http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=2&c=7&t=153

Get the A7N8X, the DDR400 (same price, might as well plus it will be better in the future if your overclocking)and the Barton 2500+. But with that being said, whats your budget? I disagree with Hal9000 - a 420 Watt PSU is not overkill in this day and age if you wish to "future-proof" it a little more, and especially considering you're thinking of using a Radeon 9800 Pro. And as for 300W being enough, only if it is a quality PSU like Antec or Enermax would you even entertain the idea, and even then you should disregard it and get something more powerful! -----

I would get a slightly slower CPU (2600+ instead of 2800+) and a faster video card. A GF4 Ti4200 is getting towards the lower end range, I'd get a 9600 Pro at a minimum, and if you can afford it, a 9800. ----- Ignorance is bliss. Just look at those fanboys... I'd personally go for the Z540 speakers, I've heard they're much nicer sound than the 640's. Also, I'd consider a slower processor, like the 2500+ for example. Still damn quick, but a lot cheaper. most places there's about $150 difference, and the 2500+ overclocks really well, taking you to 3200+ speeds. With the money saved, make sure you get decent RAM, like Kingston for example. Still cheap, but decent quality. Also, grab the Western Digital 8MB Cache drive instead of the Seagate one, much better performance. Lastly, if you get that motherboard, it has onboard sound that is quite good, has been said that it rivals the Audigy1 series for quality. So I'd ditch the Audigy, unless you're planning on an Audigy2, which is unlikely on that budget. Oh, and if you can grab yourself an Antec case with powersupply, should be had for around $150 for a pretty decent one. With these, you'll bet a good powersupply, whereas with cheap cases it's a little dodgy. Just coz I'm feeling nice, I'll give you an idea of the cost of such a system... all prices from http://www.surpass.com.au CASE: Antec Lanboy, 350W PSU, $168 CPU: 2500+, $167 MOBO: Asus A7N8X Deluxe, $228 RAM: 2x 256MB Kingston PC3200, $230 VIDEO: Albatron Ti4200 8x, $198 HDD: 80GB Western Digital 8MB cache, $145 *special* CDRW: LiteON 52x32x52 Retail, $66 MODEM: Netcomm Serial 56K modem, $137 FLOPPY: $24 MONITOR: BenQ G774 17", $210 SPEAKERS: Logitech Z540 5.1, $137 KEYBOARD: Logitech Elite BLACK keyboard, $76 MOUSE: Logitech MX500 optical, $67 OK, that whole thing is $1853, which gives you a little to play with. Not only that, but Surpass aren't the cheapest around, though they are reasonably competitive. For the extra cash to $2K, if you upgraded the monitor to the Mitsubishi Diamondview 1770 17", and got the Kingston HyperX PC3200 RAM from http://www.rkdatastore.com.au, then paid the extra shipping for those parts, you'd pretty much hit $2K on the head. Either that, or you could upgrade to the 9600pro as Virul suggested, that would add almost $150 to the price of $1853 OOh, nearly forgot. Spire WhisperRockIV cooler from http://home.iprimus.com.au/IP-PWP01/210/bohblesku/zalman.htm for another $35 plus postage (around $5). Hope this helps. BTW, are you planning on buying from one place in particular? And whereabouts are you situated? MoRoSIS: $137 is a lot for a modem. I know that hardware modems are better than software, but for that little extra performance, I wouldn't stump up an extra $100+. Plus, he needs an OS, that's a couple of hundred. Also, I'd get a $30 keyboard rather than a $76 one. USe the saved cash on a newer vid card or something. Looks like a good system though. ----- Never trust a computer you can't throw out a window -Steve Wozniak

Thanks AssM@N, yeah the MX DUO is $169 from the same place, so that would cost a little more, but be worth it if you are interested in a cordless mouse and keyboard combo. Agree with AssM@N though, if you're not overclocking grab the 2600+ as it has a significant stock speed over the 2500+. However, the 2500+ isn't a bad little overclocker, so I'd recommend you grab that one for two reasons. Firstly, it's cheaper... how can that not be good? Secondly, if you hang around here then you'll want to overclock soon enough, at which time you'll appreciate the fact that you got the barton (2500+) :) Trig42: oops, missed the OS :S The modem was just a choice based on what that shop sells. You can get a decent hardware modem for around $80 which should do fine. It depends on where you're buying and what they sell. Also, whether you're prepared to purchase online! If you shop around, you should be able to get the exact system above for a couple hundred cheaper, giving you the cash for the OS. If you can't get it quite cheap enough to afford the OS, try cutting the motherboard back to something like the A7N8X-X for around $140 or the Soltek SL-75FRN2-L for around the same. You won't get all the nice things like Soundstorm and SATA, but you will get a pretty solid board in either of those two.
