When 8Gb of RAM is barely enough

So I'm sitting here, on my new Vista 64 machine, which has 8Gb of RAM.

I writing a presentation in PowerPoint. Nothing too flash.

Then my system starts to get slower and slower and slower. And I notice, thanks to my Sidebar gadget, that over the past 10 minutes, the amount of RAM being used has climbed steadily to the point where all 8Gb is now being used, and my PC is paging stuff out to the hard drive like crazy.

What The Fuck...?!

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be going on that could consume 8Gb of RAM?

(I just ran a virus scan, and no sign of any nasties.)

Vista (or any flavour of windows)

Windows is a good memory manager, it manages to use it all.

let it do it's job.

Did you check task manager to see what was using what?
I'd suggest using Process Explorer to get a more detailed use of memory, much more informative than taskman.

Process Explorer - good idea. I was looking at Task Manager and it didn't reveal anything untoward.

You don't have any background disk defrags enabled or something?
Could also be Windows Update doing something.

ahhh, how long has it been setup?

I know the initial disk indexing can take a while, and does tend to jam up the works.

I've been running it for 2 weeks now. I've rebooted and it's all gone back to normal now.

Indexing and defragging...? Hmmmm, could be.

I know what the indexing process is called, but any idea what the defragging process would be called?

Sounds like Power Point had a wee memory leak problem.

memory leak is a common problem in issues. +1 to that process explorer, however, you can get that info by customizing the view of your task manager.

I'm with tant on this one: memory leak. I've 2GB RAM and indexing/defragging didn't pwn my system that badly.
