Hi guys,

I'm about to build a p.c. for myself and am a bit of a novice and would like a bit of help just to make sure i'm going the right way about it. Is there anything you can suggest to make this system more efficient?

Intel CORE 2 Q6600/2.4Ghz/2x4MB/1066FSB/LGA77 $213.00

Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS4P P45+ICH10R DDR2 1200 1600 MHz PCI-E 2.0 SATAII RAID GLAN 1394a 8Ch TPM ATX $193.00

Gigabyte GF9600GT 512MB 256bit DDR3 PCIE2.0 2xDVI-I TV-Out HDCP$149.00

Geil DDR2 4G PC2-8500 1066Mhz(2x2G) CAS 5 GeiL $166.00

Antec Nine Hundred Tower Gaming Case with side window Black(No PSU)$153.00

Antec ATX EarthWatts 500w $96.00

Seagate SATAII NCQ 750GB 7200RPM 32mb Cache(ST3750330AS)$146.00

Sony AD7200S0B 20X SATA OEM DVD RW Black $34.00

Cheers

Drop the mainboard down to a P45-DS3L, the graphics card up to the 4850 512MB, drop the RAM down to 4GB of DDR2-800, grab the WD 640GB and get a Pioneer 20X drive.

You'll spend a fair whack less and get a faster PC.

Check out the graphs here:
http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/powercolor_hd4850/7.htm

The blue is a 4850, and the green is a 9600GT. In other words, it's much faster :)

Doesn't make a big difference. Try and find something with a 3 year warranty.

Sapphire and HIS are generally very good, but they all have the same performance.

The bigger the warranty the better, and some also have games bundled with them, though you do pay a little more.

Also see if you can get one with better cooling (i.e not the stock heatsink) as it gets very hot under load.

Q6600 - $212
EP45-DS3l - $131 (Go with the ds3l if you end up getting a nvidia card, if getting the 4850 like suggested, stick with what you said as it supports crossfire.)
4GB DDR2 OCZ Extreme 1066mhz - $135
Saphire 4850 - $211

A Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3 will serve you just fine if you're only going to be using a single video card.

DDR2-1066 is a waste of money and you'll notice SFA performance increase. It's not worth paying twice s much as regular DDR2-800 for.

Take the $80 you save by getting DDR2-800 and put it towards a 4870 rather than a 4850. This will give you a performacne increase you'll actually notice. Much more sensible.

Everything else looks okay. I wouldn't bother with the lightscribe version of the DVD burner. To make use of it you need to buy lightscribe media that's quite expensive compared to regular media. Media with the nice white printable surface always makes for clear, easy to read labels, anyway.

The 4870 would be a very good choice, but as I have said ebfore elsewhere, plan ahead and see that you can alter the fan speeds via software or bios easily, save any hassling further ahead. Unless of course you buy an ASUS model like myself, where the card comes with its own software to adjust the fan speeds and that easily. I was pretty desperate at the time when I went to turn in my 9800GT at the computer store, and all they had was an ASUS 4850 left so put some extra money towards it in the end and have been smiling ever since :D

As ecky said as well, go with DDR2-800 as well. Especially if you are overclocking the headroom is VERY handy.

Sapphire 4870 looks like it would kick ass, bit rich though $330.00, will the 4850 do a good enough job?

I am currently using an ASUS 4850 and have to say, although I am keeping a watchful on eye on adjusting the temps as I go, it is an AWESOME performer. I mainly play CS: Source and Warcraft 3 (Also Gears of War ... when I am a tad pissed) and pretty much play with everything maxed out. I mean those games are no real mean feat however, I am sure that if I tried out Crysis I would be most impressed.
