Xbitlabs have done another GPU power article here http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/power-noise.html
So I've done the following.

Updated:
- 7950 GX2 single and SLI configs
- 7600GT (rounded up)
- 7300GS single/multi
- X1600XT (rounded up)
- X1900XT/XTX (rounded up)
- "the main factors behind power consumption" section

Added:
- X800 XL CF (as the X800 crossfire card was based on the XL)
- X1600pro single/multi
- X1900GT single/multi
- 7600GS single/multi

Multicard configs I simply doubled the single card ratings

Enjoy ;)

The X1950XTX results appear to be in this article http://www.vr-zone.com/index.php?i=3885 but I can't see any content in it :S

A forum thread that links to this review http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=110987 mentions the extra wattage it pulls, so that'll be the reference point for now. (Thanks Dasa)

Hails.

I found this thread after a Google search. I would like to request recommendations if I may.

My issue is Company of Heroes, or rather, lack thereof. My old Radeon 9100 is apparently unsupported, so I need a new card. I was looking at this
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1892482&CatId=2234 Radeon X1300, but to my limited knowledge the listed power requirement of 420 watts far outstrips my current 250. I have a basically a http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=pes_faq&message.id=339&c=u Dell PowerEdge 400SC, with the aforementioned card, a second 80 gig harddrive and an extra half gig of RAM. After this bout of upgrading, I would like it to handle:
Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
1 Gig of RAM (PC3200 ECC if it matters)
Radeon X1300 512MB DDR2 (I think my board is only AGP 4x)
DVD player (another necessary upgrade)
Current harddrives (one 40 gig, one 80 gig)

I found a site offering Dell compatible power supplies, but they are rather pricey, so after seeing your numbers there, I was wondering how necessary a new supply would be, and what I should get if that is the case (they offer 410s and 470s).

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rekkon, welcome to Atomic.

Plugging that all into this website http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp (which helps you calculate what your PC requires in Watts) it gives back a figure a hair under 250W.

So I'd say you'd definitely need to upgrade your PSU.

What size? Well I'd just go the 470W (kinda odd Wattage, but whatever) purely so it'll give you a longer upgrade path for future additions to your PC.

If money is a little tight to get the extra PSU, get the X1300 with 256MB of RAM. 512MB on a card that slow is kinda a waste of money and energy powering it, it just won't be able to use all the memory efficiently enough.

Thanks mark84. If the 410 will cut it, I will take that option. I do not plan any more upgrades to this system before getting a new one. As for the card, the plan is to get a somewhat better one, and have it last 2-3 years. When I get a new system, I will probably just transfer the video card. Plus this way I can play up having a 512MB card. :D

Thanks again.

Wow great thread!

Ive got a HIS X800XL with the iceQII arctic cooler. This card doesnt have an extra power adapter, either 6 pin PCI or Molex. My Question is;wouldit be getting enough power through the pci-e slot? I noticed last night the fan wasnt working and was thinking it may be a power issue.

I mention in the text below the graphs that PCI-E can supply upto 75W, X800XL only draws 49W.

I'd say your issue is more to do with the fan itself. Try giving it a clean and oil or replace it.

Hi all.

i've been reading this forum and some others but i'm still not sure about my psu with 7900GTX (GTO actually)

Now: BeQuiet 400W, 20A @12V (is that 240W @12V-line) (a64 3200+@2500Mhz, x800xl)

psu-calc gave about 240W w/800XL and 282W w/7900GTX
.

Can that BeQuiet deliver enough juice?

If PSU-Calc gives you 282W for your setup then that'd be pretty spot on I think.

400W PSU? Assume 80% PSU efficiency, gives you 320W to comfortably play with. You should be ok. (not to sure about that brand though)

Not the most accurate of readings or the best comparison (ie. the difference between the 1950xtx and 1900xt 256mb cards don't correlate to what readings I have) but is a good indicator of the the cards power usage.

Worked out difference between 1950xtx and pro in the article and subtracted it from my own xtx reading here to get 65W.
