Whoa... From certain sites, it looks as though the 4870 X2 draws double what you've stated, then again they've stated that CF for 4870s is something like 470w...

Hmmm...

You have to keep in mind that those sites are quoting TOTAL SYSTEM power draw.

I try and normalize an average of various readings against those from xbitlabs readings, whom actually measure power draw at the card itself via a modified pci-e bus socket and PEG power connectors with shunts, thus removing the ~80% efficiency of the PSU and the rest of the PC components from the equation, ie they have the best readings possible.

I look more at the differences between known correct readings (usually ones from xbit labs) and the target setup. If I find a few sites that agree that a setup uses a certain amount more/less than a current known setup, then I plug it in. It's not totally accurate but it's the best I can do with the info available, there's only around a -+15% maximum difference compared to the correct readings, usually <-+10%.

Edit: Grammar

Excellent explanation mate :-)

Thanks for that, looks like I may not have to upgrade after all :D

my 12V rails are only supply 18A according to the specification on the PSU, it's xsonic pos 460 watt (not 'true' 460w), the manual for the gtx 260 says it needs 36A on thw 12V rail... lol

Im running on this PSU.

Q6600,OC'ed
4GB RAM
1x SATA 300GB seagate
2x SATA 640GB RAID0 seagate
1X IDE Pioneer DVR115
PCI Firwire card
nVidia GTX 260, 896MB

@ Athiril - Well the GTX260 apparently only needs about 11A on the 12v under load. I suspect the 36A rating is there to compensate for the rest of the system too.

Will be updating this thread when I get home tonight.
