The Truth About Graphics Power Requirements V2

Thanks for your help! I wanted to use the new card for gaming that is why I bought it! I figure this will be the last upgrade for my shuttle then I will get a new tower a year or 2 from now. Anyways even with my 800XT my shuttle just restarts sometimes...others it kicks me out of the game and shuts down windows. The fan on that card is junk so not sure if it is overheating or not enough juice. Will try it with the new HD3870today with the 250 watt only and will report back. If it restarts when playing games would the best option be to take out the 250 and hook up a 350 outside the case (because it won't fit in my shuttle)? any idea on the amps i need to look for?

Well look for something with a 6pin PCI-E connector on it already, that way you should be right. Even if that means getting a 400W or something.

Edit: Also check here if you need help http://ati.amd.com/products/certified/powersupplies.html

Got my new HD3870! Decided to give it enough power the cheap way first. I hooked up the 6 pin to the power connector in my other pc. That way i can use the power from that in addition to the stock 250W Shuttle power supply for the board. AutoTune clocked it to 870Mhz GPU. Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Crysis look amazing and have mostly smooth rates. I just wish I could overclock 2D because the card goes to 300mhz to save power. Seems like DirectX7 and DirectX8 games stay at 300mhz instead of going to 870mhz like with directx9. Also I can't seem to get the Unreal Tournament 3 demo to work. the demo errors out when i change the resolution from 640 and that kills D3D for the windows session. As far as I know the only way to get D3D working again is to reboot. anyone know a faster way?

Ok big update!

Basically with a bit of a nudge and help from kike I've now put all the data I've collected into an Excel sheet. With this I can now have up to three sources of data and it'll work out the average idle-2d-3d wattages. I can also use it to determine which readings produce a more precise result (though that doesn't necessarily mean more accurate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accuracy_and_precision that depends on how the sources do their testing etc)

It doesn't average it if I have a source that reads the power right at the card (like xbitlabs) or if it's an official rating with no other data available or something similar. In which case that reading will override any other results.

Also it includes a PSU efficiency factor of 80% in all the calculations (adjustable per card if necessary). So as a result most of the wattages for cards not from xbitlabs or official ratings have changed by a small margin. Multicard configs were affected the most 3-way 8800 ultra dropped by quite a bit as a result. This means that all ratings are power drawn from the PSU not from the wall as it was in half the cases.

Being in an excel sheet I can now make pretty graphs!
Charts sorted by peak 3D - http://mark.zoomcities.com/images/gfx/GFXpowerchartby3d.png
Charts sorted by idle - http://mark.zoomcities.com/images/gfx/GFXpowerchartbyidle.png
I've linked to these in the main post just before the ASCII charts start. Will update these every time I update my post. These are easier to upkeep so let me know if I've left out or not updated something in the ASCII charts.

Also, the way I work out ratings for some cards depends on results of others, so updating one could update several others, making it somewhat more annoying to upkeep the ASCII version of the charts. Unless someone knows how to make a macro or VB script in Excel to convert numbers into ASCII graphs it's somewhat harder to upkeep the ASCII ones. But I'll do what I can. Again let me know if something in one doesn't match up with the other.

Feed back on all this would be appreciated!

How much power would 4 single 3870 gpus draw in crossfirex mode?

thanks

I'd say it'd be slightly more than the ~310W of the HD 3870 X2 CF reading.

Having a 4th GPU atm is a bit of a moot point imo, the drivers barely fully make use of a 3rd one let alone a 4th.

Any idea how much power HD4870 in Crossfire will draw?
Also HD4870 with HD4870X2 in Crossfire?
Can you pretty much just add the wattages ie. 150+250=400?

would be a crazy system, cant wait to get my hands on those new cards.

Waiting for proper reviews to come out. The only site with power readings of the 4870 that one I know of is the expreview site. But there's something not right with the readings.

I've got 4850 and 4850 CF data, just waiting on some proper 4870 reviews before I do the next update.

Adding wattages, pretty much. Though with multi gpu setups it doesn't always work that way. Depends how much all the extra gpus get loaded up too. eg 3870X2+3870 in CF pulls less than simply adding 3870X2 by itself and what a 3870 pulls by itself.

hmm, ok. well i'll just stick it out then. hoping a good 750W can handle 4870X2, HD4870 with Q6600, couple hard drives, fans etc.
thanks for the help

lol I'll be the same, my 750W will have to handle something like 4870 CF, quad core CPU, 4 HDD and 2 ODDs etc :p

EDIT: Just some observations about the latest update.

- 4870 CF at idle pulls as much as 2900XT CF does!
- 4870 pulls 3x more power at idle compared to 3870!
- GTX200 draws less at idle than 4800 series, but draws more at peak.
- 9800GTX+ pulls more at idle than 9800GTX but less at peak

hmm i was thinking 4870x2 would be nice
but if 3870x2 power usage in comparision to 3870 is anything to go by 4870x2 could use well over 100w idle

here is xbit power draw for 4850 40.7 61.2 109.9

Thanks for the link. Was waiting for them to release some 4870 results before updating again. Taking their sweet time :p

I did read some where that ATI didn't correctly implement 'power play' in the drivers. Not sure if it's true, but if so the idle scores might improve next driver release.
