Gainward 4870 GS Issues

I recently purchased myself a gainward 4870 golden sample, as to me it had a reasonable cooling solution attached when compared to the reference card.

I currently run an XP system with a core2duo, GB 965P-DS4, Asus 7950GT, Antec NeoHe 550w PSU which i built early 2007.

I purchased the gainward, installed it, and fired up my usual games, CSS, CoD4 that style of thing, and turned the graphics up a few notches to give the card a test out, and all seemed to be going well.

A number of hours later, after quitting the games, the screen started going black, then coming back, and it would do this again over and and over, at random intervals, and the screen sometimes stays black for 10 seconds +.

I have tried everything i can think of, updated the bios on my mobo etc etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

1. What drivers are you using?
2. What version is the BIOS for your card?
3. Have you tried this with a different monitor, or the monitor on a different system? (if you can that is)
4. Did you remove the previous nVidia drivers?
5. Is this a VGA monitor, using a DVI adaptor? (the adapter could be faulty)

Drivers are the latest catalyst drivers from the ati website. So Catalyst 8.8.

GPU-Z tells me my bios is
BIOS Version: VER011.007.000.000.000000

I have tried multiple monitors, the problem occurs on both i have.

I reformatted my XP installation before i installed the new card.

vv Total Specs vv
Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4Ghz
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4 MB
2gig DDR2 OCZ Gold Edition PC6400
Antec NeoHe 550w Modular PSU
Gainward 4870 Golden Sample 512mb
330gig HDD Space
Samsung 226BW 22" Wide Screen
Windows XP Professional SP3

Its DVI directly, no adaptor. I have tried 2 LCD's, a 19" and a 22" wide, would you suggest trying another?

Okay try the 8.7's

So we can rule out monitors, I don't think the stock BIOS would be resulting in this, and we can rule out nVidia drivers conflicting, and adaptor.

run furmark and see what temps get to, it could be something over heating

OK wow this card has some real stability issues.

I reinstalled the drivers from the disc, which matched the release date of the 8.7's and ran furmark. The card died like 5 restarts in a row...even when running at 640x480 in a window.

After that failed i left the CCC from the disc that came with the card installed, and just updated the drivers, to 8.8, and the stability has increased, i am going to continue running furmark to see if it comes off its hinges again, but its running alot better now....lets see how long it lasts.

Originally after installing all the drivers from the disc, i downloaded the full package from the ati site, 8.8, which included the new CCC etc. I dont know if its just random coincidence, but the CCC on the cards disc with just the new drivers is more stable.

Cheers for everyones help.

There i go counting my chickens again, its still very flakey, it still blinks in and out (screen goes black and returns at random intervals), and sometimes freezes up completely...

Sounds to me like it's been overclocked too far =S

I would RMA it, TBH, new cards shouldn't do that, send it back/

well i dont overclock personally, this card has a turbo switch on the back, and a dual bios designed to deal with the factory overclock it comes with....i am really lost as to why its running me around in circles.

I have turned the turbo switch just back to normal so it just runs at stock....it seems better but it still blinks in and out when stressed, sometimes even when its not.

OLD cards shouldn't do that....looks like you scored a dud.
best RMA it asap, hopefully the shop'll just give you a new one (if you just bought it) should only have to wait a couple of weeks at the most for a new card.

i wonder if your ram is getting to hot cause of the aftermarket cooling, i recall the max tjunction the ram could take was something like 95c so it could be that but im not sure, use riva tuner 2.10 and ramp the fan speed up and see if it helps.

also try
-the hotfix drivers
-run driver sweep in safe mode and clean everything ati off
-try the 8.7's again and see how it runs.

mm more than likely the ram or vrm's have not gotten adequate cooling and as a result might be fubared.
