if i where you id take the 4870X2. but if i personally had a choice i would wait half a year or something until the new.... wel basiclly what apocrypha

(personally im still sad cause i updraded from a single overclocked 8500GT to 2 7800GTX's which is still sad, the only reason i stuff about new hardware is because one of my friends buys everything when it comes out and wants to give me some better stuff for free YAY)

Obviously your little arrangement with your friend doesn't include books, like dictionary's..? :p

But seriously, you can always 'Wait for the next big thing', but then you would never actually end up purchasing anything.

I've heard the next generation of GPUs from ATi will feature true dual-core chips.

Nvidia have officially stated the GT200 series is their last single core series before moving on to multi-core GPUs, too.

It will be quite in interesting to see the techniques ATi and Nvidia implement in their next generation cards, but that's probably ~6-12 months away before we see any real jumps in GPU technology.

I've been waiting since last year to buy a system. I watched with interest the 3870X2, hoped the Nvidia 9800 series would be light years ahead of the Nvidia 8800 series and with the release of the 4870X2 am fready to take the plunge! I shall wait no longer.

Of course Nehalem is around the corner, but I am not waiting for yet another release of new technology/architecture. I'll just live with socket 775.

Lukey1990 totally man, waiting for the next big thing is not something you want to do.. I say, if ya got the cash and need the benefit from it, get it.

I upgraded, my e6650, and 8800gts 320mb to something like q9550, 4870x2. so for me it was a smart choice. as I play my games in 1920x1200 res, I needed something that will do that, which I have. and further more, the 4870x2 will do this till end of next year.

That's so AMD can put the label 'native' on another product. :P

That's correct.

Waiting is fine, but for a reasonable amount of time.

Having said that i jumped from my 3870 (which i had planned to pair with a 3870X2, minimum) to a 7950GX2, X1950XTX and then a 2600Pro, mostly because i was waiting for the 'right' card to sink several hundred on.

Well I might jump in here. I just installed a new 1000w PSU and an Asus 4870x2. Here is what happened. You can see my config in my sig.

I upgraded from an Asus 8800Ultra.

COD4 now sits at 91FPS and rarely moves. Odd.
Company of Heroes sits at 60FPS on DX10 and rarely moves.

Do these stats sound right? I mean there is a clear visibal performance increse from the 8800ultra but for fps just so sit around these numbers give or take 5 fps and not move?

All settings maxed out on a 22" monitor.

Vertical Synchronization (V-sync) would explain the 60FPS in CoH.

However 90FPS seems unlikely, i assume your using 1680x1080 resolution in CoD4?

If so there isn't a monitor (AFAIK) that is capable of a 90Hz refresh rate at that resolution setting.
