This either goes here or in motherboards section. Move if needed.

I don't think Nvidia can hold on to their "lock-in" policy for SLI for much longer. Putting a "key" in the BIOS to allow the driver to enable SLI? pfft

Just open it up already. That quite clearly shows there's nothing special in their SLI chipsets. Just money grabbing.

I suppose if they do it this way, then Intel may let them make chipsets for the Nehalem processors.

I think that Intel has made them yield to do this... bastards. Hopefully people will remember that the nVidia chipsets were good... a bit hot, but good, well at least for AMD system's they rocked!

Either way its more money for nVidia!

I should clarify my point about the chipsets. I meant the chipsets themselves are good but the requirement of having one to enable SLI is baloney. It's all in the drivers.

it would be cool if intel could just implement it and say "haha stfu nvidia" but im sure there has been some shady money passings/under the table kickbacks on this one.

More like pressuring from Intel. nVidia don't want to lose out on a profitable chipset business, no doubt Intel will let them make one now, because they have SLI and Xfire on the one chipset... which makes it even more favourable then getting an AMD system. Which still have a separated Xfire and SLI chipset.

if you read close enough you'll notice that this support is only a one off deal just for X58 chipset. no ther chipsets will have SLi support. I'm pretty sure this is all to get ready for nehalem, which is important for both intel and nvidia. To me, it clearly looks like a win-win situation for both intel and nvidia. Intel gets SLi support which will make their chipset even more popular and nvidia will get support for nehalem. Plus they'll get their certification premium from all manufacturers going for this technolgoy. Great going nvidia. ;)

It's only happening for just this chipset because nvidia can't get the license for QPI to make their own chipsets for nehalem, hence why they're doing this way.

It's their only option for getting sli capable mobos ready for the launch.

People may start to stop buying Nvidia Motherboard chipsets if Intel make them put it on their reference design. But Nvidia should stop gouging and give people choice.

Well that is their patented technology and they would've invested top dollars in R&D for it. So it makes sense to keep it like that. Also this is only a one off deal for X58 chipset to get their hands on it. In future chipsets SLi will be limited to nvidia.

whatever happens one this is for sure. X58 is going to be the most anticipated/popular chipset in intel's arena so far. can't wait to get my hands on nehalem.

I knew it. I thought Nvidia was canning the idea of making Intel Chipsets. wtf.
