Hi guys. What's the best card I could get for around $200 - $250? I've just moved to around the Ashfield area in Sydney if anyone knows any good computer shops in that area would help to.

The HD4850 is really the card to get for the sub $200 market, the 9800GTX+ shades it in a few games like crysis but crysis is a shit optimised for even shitier GPU's =P

Thanks for that.
I looked up umart and I can get there easy on the bus. Looks like the HD 4850 is the one to get with all those recommendations.
Is one brand better than another when it comes to reliability?

Out of the cards at Umart the HIS HD4850 IceQ4 Turbo for $259 would be my choice as it comes with a better cooler.

Having said that any of the others are fine.

ITSDirect have the Gainward 9800GT 'Golden Sample' edition with 1GB DDR3 for $232 + post. This is the overclocked version @ 650/1900.

http://www.itsdirect.com.au/com_products.php?view=detail&category_id=48&Product_ID=3313&a

Considering the overclock and 1Gb DDR3 this would be a good choice at the price.

The guys at ITSDirect are very helpful, and seem above board, with advice on products.

there is only one game i can think of that would actually use more than 512MB of RAM, the rest that card would not be able to run at a playable frame rate.

might as well get a 9800GTX+ or a HD4850 for the ~same price, and get considerable more power.

there is a few at 1920x1200
company of heroes ~750m
stalker ~640m
oblivion if moded can use over 1g
and if he plans to keep the card a year or more there is bound to be more games on the way

i had a gainward 8800gt gs 1g which is basically the same there a good card and 1g mem is nice but for a budget card the 4850 512m is probably a better buy and try for ~1g on $300+ cards

Hmmmm. I rarely play games but I like to dabble in Photoshop and video editing, that sort of thing.
Would more RAM make it better in those applications?

By rarely what do you mean? And what games?

Point is, if you don't need the grunt why spend $200+ on a card you won't fully utilize when you can spend $100 and get something that'll suit you just as well. AFAIK Photoshop and video editing don't really need grunty GPUs, atm they're still CPU bound.

Mainly car driving games.
I've got a 6200 atm and they can go a bit jerky now and then.
I'd probably play them more if it didn't do that.

www.itestate.com.au has a Gigabyte GTX260 for $279.

I just got one. Hands down best gfx card I've ever owned, overclocks really well too. Almost on par with a GTX280, which is better then anything on offer atm ;)

Nvidia all the way, regardless of what everyone says.

edit;shpelling.

Just to clarify, are you on AGP, or PCI-E?

Lol.

Even though the HD4870X2 is the worlds fastest GPU?
