What CrossFireX Combo?

Thanks for all your help fellas much appreciated! I am still shopping various bits for example I wonder what difference 1066 ram would have over 800? And as pretty as that P180 series case was it was a bit wallet happy and I plan on upgrading to a couple of TB of storage with a month or so, which means I will need those drive bays!

Looking into the CM/RC cases now.

I think this little system will have some nice minor OC potential and run everything nice and gravy! (except crysis!) but hopefully once the drivers are cleaned up... it should run very nice.

I am right in thinking that as long as I have a 2 slot PCI board I can stick another 4870X2 next to the existing one and run them in crossfire am I not? surely that would give crysis a decent kick in the arse!

As long as you are getting that X48 chipset motherboard you will have no worries about putting in another 4870X2.

It's only with chipsets below enthusiast level ie. P45, G45 and such where they'll only put one full speed PCI-Ex 16x slot and the other will be a crappy one.

Also, RAM speed like you said above is only really a big consideration if you are planning to overclock your CPU heavily.

If you are gonna overclock the heck out of your CPU you want overly fast RAM so the RAM isn't limiting your overclock.

If you are just going for a minor overclock you could save cash by getting slower RAM, just make sure it's good quality still though.

I have just changed my system again ram is now

Geil DDR2 4G PC-6400 800Mhz DDR2 Dual Channel(2x2G) GeiL 5-5-5-15 $110
Thermaltake Tough Power 750W Modular PSU $190
Coolermaster RC-690-KKN1 690 Case with Black mesh $90

Reading the canucks review of the 4870x2 they say unless you are running HD res you are going to be wasting your time and over clocking the CPU which apparently is not a difficult task even with air cooling will make it even better.

I would like to up this Intel ATX E8600 CORE 2 3.33GHz a few percent comfortably just because it should be done!

Reviews or the E8600 are very thin on the ground though. God my excitement is high. 20 days till Warhead launches!

That case with a much better PSU has got the price down under 2500 and I was not using the online umart prices.. I wonder how much for delivery from bris to syd.

Looks good man.

I'm only running a 22" monitor with 1680x1050 resolution and a lowly Q6600 CPU.

I still wouldn't call owning a HD4870X2 a waste of time :)

As long as you're happy with the system go hard and I'm certain you'll be happy with the system as long as the build goes well.

Hell, I'd be damn happy with that system...and I'm a notorious hardware whore.

I have been running a Compaq Presario Lappy 1.5ghz with 504mb of shared memory for almost 2 years (40GB HDD). I have really felt like I had a missing limb since the heady days of HL2 Ep1 (the last PC FPS I played on my own rig. I am so excited I could burst with joy. You know that feeling that tech occasionally gives you like a sweet surprise or unexpected radness.

A good mate of mine has a weapon Vista 64bit PC that is Quadcore running Nvida 8800GTX Ultra it does run crsysis really nice. COD 4 BF2 R6V2 TF2 DIRT GRID hell anything on his PC runs at max everything but I have notice that the res has be turned down a bit on crysis and AA is low...

He is telling me I should quadcore instead of core duo? or if I quad duo then go XP (I want vista though its purdy)

Can someone briefly explain why I should get better performance from the DUO? Apparently the current flock are bottleneky and my initial research tells me that around Xmas 44nm AMD quads will be breaking free and shitting on the current run.

If they are really that pimping I will switch over if my duo is still running strong by compare I might get another 4870x2 or whatever other new ATI card is out. This crossfire business should be forwards compatible with future ATI cards right? and the 70x2 along side a new xmas08 ATI gpu might give me far more immediate and useful results than a fast quad core with smaller lines.

At least I hope that is the case the ability to upgrade to another card (2) every 6 months ditch the first or sell it after each 2nd cycle and get a nice performance boost from cousin cards instead of twins would make the whole upgrade process lots more tolerable.

All this and I bet my ass that every now and then I will hit mozilla or ie and the prick will take 5 seconds to load.

No matter how fast they get you still wait. When will it be fast enough to load my browser instantly every time internets when!

Now I am off to review gaming mice. Aparantly the MX revo is poo for games!

http://amdandintel.blogspot.com/2008/07/intel-e8600-surpasses-6-ghz-on-dfi-p35.html

"Intel's highest-clocked Wolfdale CPU, the E8600 hasn't even been officially introduced and it is already making waves in more Eastern parts of the world with its overclocking capabilities. Backed by a system consisting of a DFI LP UT P35 motherboard, 4GB of DDR2 memory and a Radeon HD 4870 card, and a big bucket of liquid nitrogen, the 3.33 GHz-clocked Core 2 Duo E8600 was able to reach a top speed of 6000.2 MHz and later on 6146.9 MHz.

Achieved by the guys at coolaler.com, the 6.14 GHz mark was possible by taking the processors' FSB (front side bus) all the way up to 614 MHz (the multiplier being of 10), from the 'standard' 333 MHz. These E0 revision Core 2 Duos are looking good
already."

WOH

I don't plan on liquid nitrogen but maybe water cooling nice! I also got told tonight that you can't overclock and run like that constantly? Surely I can bump it a reasonable amount with proper cooling and it wont fry?

yea i have one, its a dam fine cpu :) you should easily get 4.2ghz if you get an alright cooler :) there is a umart in sydney just so you know oh and crucial ballistix tracer ram is only a few dollars more and uses much better chips if you want to get into overclocking.

head over to xtremesystems for some 6.7ghz e8600 action as well.

Okay folks I have everything up and running latest graphics card drivers 8.8 and a bunch of updates for vista home premium 64bit (it doesn't however say SP1???)

I just ran 3D Mark O6 and got 14000 marks http://i37.tinypic.com/2vikord.jpg

The CPU Tests both of them CHUGGED HARD and averaged 0 frames with peaks of 2 frames WTF?

Is that good bad indifferent or is something going amiss here? Am I seeing this lack of 4 GHZ processor bottleneck thing that I heard about should I start OCing the e8500 towards 4?

0 frames on CPU seemed shit?

It plays Vegas 2 pretty damn nice though. Time for crysis install I think I wish more people had this card for Orb Score comparisons.

Cheers

Nes I ended up with most of what you suggested with some changes for 2400 I must say I am fantastically stoked I totally owe you a beer for your help. Here is what I ended up with

http://i37.tinypic.com/307xmgw.jpg

Setting up 5.1 sound is a c*nt! took 3 hours far longer than vista plus updates and drivers for everything GRRRR!

Thanks again boys I am loving it :P

my 28" ViewSonic only cost me $625.....I'm very happy with it, and the small dent that it put in my wallet.

My next purchase is a Sammy 46 inch 650 series full HD LCD I am more than happy with the BENQ 24 inch for the price as I new fairly soon I would be using tv out to play grid on the big telly. So I don't need more than 24 I just wanted HD res I would have been happy with 22 but the GPU is useless at under 1920 x 1200 apparantly...

Why is my futuremark so shit though?

because the card is being starved of bandwidth and cpu throughput ie: one of the cores is sitting in idle because there is nothing for it to do, what you need to do is oc about to 4ghz and you should see quiet a significant difference :) although my crossfire setup is still bottlenecked at 4ghz and i need to run it at 4.5 to get full speed out of it. before you do anything though what cooler do you have? if its the stock one i would not push much higher than about 3.4-3.5 on stock or less volts

and thanks for the compliments :) i only suggest to people what i would buy given the cash they have.

Sorry for being a twit but I don't really get what you mean by cooler. I have standard Case cooling from the RC690 there is fans all over the place and I have taken some photos to show what the processor is cooled with.

I would like to slowly read up on water cooling and as much as everything runs great I knew that a OC was going to be required to make the bits play nice.

Thanks again for your patience with me

Cooler?

hmm its the stock intel cpu cooler (stops chip from melting lol) i would say you have a read of some overclocking articles and oc to about 3.4ghz although if your getting decent frames in games then there is really no need if you don't feel comfortable doing it :)
