with my rig i get just under 17k with cards at stock and cpu at 3.07gig and ram at 950 5-5-5-12.
yeah at stock that sounds about right, clock up your cpu which is now the bottleneck.

I always thought SLI 8800GTS 512 would break the 15k without any tinkering?

Yeah but I am only running 2.4. I want to overclock anyway so I'll see how it goes.

What type of RAM and CPU cooler do you have? If you have a good cooler on your CPU you can get a nice stable overclock. Maybe even 3.4GHz with some decent case ventilation. Dual Channel RAM may improve 3dMark06 scores, though by how much I'm not sure.

A Noctua NH-U9B or a 120mm fan or a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme (if you have the room in your case for Ultra 120 EX) should let you overclock without your PC making a lot of noise. You do need to buy a separate retention clip and fan for the Ultra 120 Extreme so it is more expensive). You may even be able to disable the odd case fan with one of those coolers. Some Atomicans have been able to disable both their front case fans with these coolers and you can barely even hear their PC running when you stand next to it.

To give you an idea, I can run my Q6600 at 3.0GHz with Intel cooler but have it at stock speeds. It will post at 3.4GHz+, though I haven't tried to run my OS with CPU at above 3.0GHz for more than a couple minutes, as I don't want it to die. I'm waiting for my Ultra 120 Extreme to be delivered so I can test it at up to 3.4GHz and see if I can break my 12,000 odd 3DMark06 score with my 1 wee little 8800GTS 320MB card. CPU and vid card were overclocked for that run though. 10,000 odd 3DMark06 at normal speeds. I also run DDR2 800 RAM.
I'll PM you when I get my cooler and let you know if that helped. I'll have to reinstall 3DMark06 again so that could be fun :)

At the moment everything is stock, I'm about to buy a TRUE 120 though. Cheap ram however, 2gig non-dual channel Transcend 800.

Also what has disturbed me more is this:
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/1389/concernzx7.gif
That is very very worrying, sinice it was IDLE. When I'm gaming its about 70 and when I ran OCCT it didn't last 5 minutes, it hit 85. NOT GOOD. I think I need that TRUE more than I knew.

My case has excellent ventilation, it's a Cooler Master Cosmos S. I love my case :)

I just got my Thermalright ULtra 120 Extreme today. I'm about to install it. I'll tell you how well it works. I'll check my temps before and after and PM you with the details. If you have any problems there are usually install guides on the website which are better than the instructions that come with the cooler.

Would the high temps cause the CPU to underclock? CPUZ and OCCT both show it running at 1600MHz and it jumps up to 2400MHz for a couple of seconds before returning to 1600.

No that's just because you have certain throttling options enabled. Go into your BIOS, disable Speedfan, EIST and C1E 2, these are things that will slow down your CPU for power consumptions reasons, and put it at normal when there is a need for it.

Also disable Auto CPU fan control, so that it's spinning all the time, otherwise you may get some bad heating issues.

I had similar problems as what you did, albeit with a q6850 not a q6600. My CPU was sitting at about 42 on idle, but hit 60 odd within 5-10 seconds on being put under load. 3dMark06 would return about 4000 odd marks, with, as you had experienced too, shutdowns during the bench tests.

My problem was caused by the CPU heatsink/fan not being attached properly. It caused the CPU to auto throttle back to it's underperforming stage (3GHz down to 2GHz) to produce as little heat as possible. Once the heatsink/fan was properly attached, the CPU went down to <20 degrees (gotta love canberra's weather for air cooling) and 3dMark06 went up to over 14k.

It's possible that this may

I was going to suggest re seating the CPU but was beaten to it. It's always something simple.

How are things now waylander232, had any luck?

The Ultra 120 Extreme is huge. You need a lot of clearance so you should measure from the top of your CPU to the outside edge of your case and see how much clearance you have (you should do this for all coolers). I forgot about the half inch or so that my motherboard sits up on rail it slides out on. Modding time! I now need to make a scoop in my side panel to fit the cooler. :)

Temps CPU idle 26C, system 27C. 12292 3DMark06. I'll get some load temps.

I love aluminium.

Still waiting for my TRUE120 to be delivered. Delivery dramas but that seems to be all sorted.

I don't think space will be an issue, my case is massive. It's a Cooler Master Cosmos S.
(W) 266 x (H) 598 x (D) 628mm

Big enough...?

Just checked, should have about 80mm to play with.

Also, taking CPU Fan speed off auto is what caused the my scores to hit about 13k.
