The main difference isnt Vista vs XP as Dasa has highlighted but 32bit vs 64bit.

I get a serious nailing in terms of performance when using 64bit.

I might be sounding really stupid here, but there are better results from a system using 32bit than using 64bit thats what your saying...right?

Coz i have most of my benchmarks in 64bit vista with 4gb ram. now i have 6gb ram. but what your saying is i will see a marginal improvement if i use the 32bit operating system?

thats a fair point PC FREAK so 32bit vista could currently be the best for 3dm06

well since 3dmark06 only needs ~512m ram and was made for a 32bit os its a fair bet it may score a bit higher than on a 64bit os regardless of how much ram you have

After seeing your scores dasa and marx, i formatted my pc to get it in top shape to have a go and see how well i can do in vista 32bit. But after overclocking my cpu my motherboard wouldnt boot up. After clearing Cmos a thousand times and changing cpu and the works. i found out the damn bios had corrupted. Stupid shit! anyhow i managed to work it out in the end. after like 4 hours so no benching :(.

Im hoping to have a go later on with vista 32 and post up some results from my rig below!

Well i have this result : http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=7754941 its my 22k in windows XP 32bit.

Which is my highest 3dmark06 score to date. But ive in stalled Vista 32bit im just updating , then going to create an image and let me benching begin!

Ill get two results, 1st will be stock and the 2nd will be my best score with my hardware (overclocking of course).

I will leave all the Driver and program settings to default and have a fully patched and working PC. Ill post results here when i get time to run them!

64 bit is slower.

3dmark06 has to run in 32bit mode so its not running native.

For an example Nesquick with 4850 and 4870 in CF got within 200 marks of our 4870 CF mark.

For the moment Vista 32 i think would be best or XP 32.

Vista 64 is slower for superpi too. A side note that is it can be hard to stress test as 32 bit simulated apps can be hard to stress out cores to the max.

All the above are my own experiences however so this may just be my noobness :)

Ok,

Here is my best score with all setting on default and driver quality set to balanced with Vista 32bit.

Score: 21247
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=7963694

System
CPU: Q9450@ 3.6ghz
RAM: 4gb Corsair Dominator 5-5-5-15 1050
MOBO: GA-X48-DQ6
GPU: Crossfire ATI 4870
OS: Vista x86 (32bit)

I have also got a E8400 which i can clock to 4.5ghz which is in another of my benchmarks which might be able to push the score slightly more but i doubt it.

I will post a Stock result soon !

In theory the 8400 should beat that quad core quite easy.

Greater bandwidth as a result of lower multi. Of course thats semi dependent on the multi you use for your quad. That and the extra 900mhz :)

It would beat the quad core in terms of overall performance, but it will lack a bit in the CPU Score dep.

Isn't it because in Vista x64, all programs not capable in 64bit are run using a 32bit converter. Hence the slowdown?
