Version 0.8c

WELL, I'm tired of not being able to find a single, definitive source for HSF technical specifications and theoretical maximum performance. So I'm making my own.

The following figures are based on an output of 120W, and an ambient temperature of 25c. Thermal resistance is key here, the lower the better. Manufacturers' published thermal resistance ratings are used where applicable, signified by the lack of (est.) to represent Estimated.

Take into account the fact that I am not a thermodynamicist, and ergo cannot definitively state that these figures will be perfectly accurate, but to the best of my knowledge when used in similarly ideal circumstances the differences will be marginal.

Additional HSFs will be added as I come across them or they are brought to my attention.

TO work out what temperatures you should expect when circumstances are ideal:

Find out what the maximum thermal output of your CPU is. This can be found out at http://www.amdcompare.com or http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/default.asp via the technical pages.

Multiply the wattage of the CPU by the thermal efficiency and then add the ambient temperature, and you'll have the (somewhat) magic number.

Listed below are two examples using the published C/W figures for the two Swiftech HSFs (with Vantec TD8038Hs) and the two hottest consumer CPUs both AMD and Intel currently produce:

AMD Opteron 180 : 110W
w/ Swiftech MCX6400-V (0.15 C/W) at 25c Ambient:
110 * 0.15 = 16.5 + AMB (25c) = 41.5

Intel Pentium 4 EE 955 : 130W
w/ Swiftech MCX775-V (0.145 C/W) at 25c Ambient:
130 * .145 = 18.85 + AMB (25c) = 43.85

What the numbers mean:

Cooler name = Published Thermal resistance = Theoretical Temp (Maximum Fan RPM)

THERMAL paste also plays a big part in the cooling scenario; Ideally applied AS5 can have a thermal resistance of up to 0.09 C/W (0.003" application), allowing heat to transfer from the CPU to the HSF quickly. Proper instructions for applying AS5 can be found here:

http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

Bear in mind that since a few manufacturers (especially GigaByte, Thermaltake and Thermalright) are hush-hush about the thermal resistance of their products I am unable to give definitive published figures for them, but have instead worked out the probable C/W based on their performance in reviews I've seen.

Disclaimer : The above values are in no way guaranteed by me or anyone else to be accurate; If you buy something listed and find that it isn't as good as you think it is...

Well, tough cookies. Caveat emptor.

Momeeno :)

Edit: Added HSF supported fan sizes.
Edit: Added correct CNPS9500 C/W. - Thanks wwwww.
Edit: Added CPU suitability and Performance classes - Thanks Caelum.

Have you researched all of these and averaged them..

If not please do so and have a wider asortment of coolers

Then i will say +1 sticky

and maybe others can post thier temps with certian coolers which would add to the amount content.

I'm not sure how up-to-date it is anymore, but this used to be the bible on HSF reviews -

I only put this up for extra inspiration to you - nice work you've done here.

Presler EE + AMD stock cooler @ 30C = 76C, during typical usage (135W)

*grins*

I'll vote a sticky.

btw the swiftech one is a Vantec TD8038H.

Quake and Bake: I have researched them insofar as to find out what their thermal resistance is, what fan RPM they run and what their names are. I can't guarantee uniform heat input and output throughout using these coolers, and therefore I am also unable to guarantee that the nominal temperatures listed will be accurate to a certainty :( Extra coolers coming soon :)

wwwww: Thanks for the addition. 135W? Do they bundle free watercooling with it :p

"Zalman CNPS9500 = 0.12 C/W = 39.4c (2600RPM)
Fan: Integrated
- Possibly incorrect C/W "

btw the Zalman value is way off

Just bought one, with ASC + a 120mm Delta on the other side

21C ambient

@ 135W = 44C = 0.17 C/W
@ 175W = 68C = 0.26 C/W

The gas in the pipes can't move enough heat, severely loses ground against conventional coolers in high power environments.

@ CPU @ 68C, the sink base is 66C, the top area of the fins is roughly 26C

if this is going to be sticky, i think below each HSF, you should have what CPU's they're able to be mounted on also.

Thanks for the info guys.

wwwww - I found a variant of the Zalman tech sheet on the CNPS9500 and it lists the purportedly correct C/W (0.19v), and working with that and your results I think it is correct :). Cheers :)

Xabbu - Thanks. Handy :)

Caelum - Yep, you've read my mind. Coming soon :)

My first value is prob slightly lower 'cause of the Delta :P, but it really starts to lose ground once you put alot more heat into it. I'd say no more than 150W.

re: CNPS9500 - I'm sure it isn't perfectly accurate but I think that people can get the gist of how well it performs, and I've already covered the possibility of innacuracy :D

Thanks :)

Yeah, if you can built this up, have all manner of coolers included, maybe eventually include WC kits too.

I reckon this is more useful than some stickes around

one alteration i think that would be nice is - instead of having ethm alphabetically listed, how about listed according to thermal efficiency?

that would make searching for the 'best' cooler a lot easier.

Thanks for the suggestion Caelum, I've sorted them by category of thermal efficiency :)

Edit: Due to Thermaltake's lack of specifications on their pages I've sent them a request for the thermal efficiencies of the Sonic Tower, Silent Tower, and Big Typhoon. Let's hope they don't classify that information as an Industry Secret :)
