Proposed Sticky: Things you can and can't overlcock

Becasue of a recent insurgence(sp?) of people asking to overclock things, I have made this thread, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :)

CPU
- Yes, you can overclock this, by either a multiplyer or raising the FSB, only if the motherboard supports it

spamzors cpu overclocking guide
http://www.atomicmpc.com/forums.asp?s=2&c=6&t=507

RAM
- Yes, you can overclock this, if the motherboard supports it

Graphics Card
- Yes, you can overclock this, through software

ExtremeTech graphics card overclocking guide
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,210184,00.asp

Sound Card
- You can make you sound card run faster through raising the FSB, but that makes no difference to sound quality or anything anyway
- Upping the PCI bus speed will NOT make your sound card run faster

Network Card
- Read above

Modem
- For interneal: read above.
- For external: no

Hard Drive
- There are ways you can make it read faster, but these kill your HDD, so essentially, no

CDROM/CDRW/DVDROM/DVDRW
- No, but you can flash the firmware to get it to be able to read/burn at faster speeds

good flashing guide (GOOD )
http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewtopic.php?t=537(the third post in the thread)

Northbridge/Southbridge
- No

Calculators
- Only by replacing the clock crystal, in other words, no.
- With some calculators you can, but its very likely that yours can't

Your Brain
- No, some drugs can accelerate the rate at which the brain responds.
- Getting near an electrical appliance will make it try and run at a higher frequency, but that doesn't make any difference anyway

great article on smart drugs
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/smartd.html

Monitor
- Through powerstrip, you can increse the pixel clock to get a higher refresh rate out of it, but it will shorten its life dramatically
- If you open your monitor, you will die

now it's REALLY gaining momentum

You'll find that you can't make your sound card faster because of and overclock.....or any other PCI card.

HDD's: Why include this in the first place.......overclocking......clocking . HDD's don't use clock cycles. But you can make them fast or slower.......

HDD's are "overclockable" ii have done a mod which involeved increaseing the voltage to the HDD motor... sure only 20mb of the data worked (the rest got fucked by dust ^_^) and only lasted 4 1/2 hours it read 3mb faster

soundcards ARE overclockable, but as the PCB and designs of the controller doesnt allow adjustments

NB can be overclocked by increaseing your FSB (GENERAL rule of thumb, overclock ur FSB and overclock anything attached to your NB/SB, obiously not always true !!)

i have overclocked my TI83+ texas calculator by increaseing the voltage into the core (its speed is determined by the amount of power coming in i bleive) and runsss about 3x as fast

you can drill a hole in your head which gets more oxygen circulated to your head and improves artichmic and other brain functions

network cards however is basically not worth even thinkingh about it

I'll add it to my sticky if you like, under a new section...? I'll give credit where credit is due ;) That way you can just link to that post instead of maknig a whole new sticky thread with not much in it.

Spamzor was right in what he was saying but just to keep things simple (simple.... like the people who ask questions like this...) I think we should just leave it as -=LSX=- put it.

Also, maybe add Monitors- You can increase some monitor's refresh rate above their design specs but this will kill its logic circuitry pretty soon. So it's not a wise idea.

i think a more appropriate title would be: "Things you can, can't and probably shouldn't overclock"
