quiet cooling - 4400+ experiences?

Hey all,

Looking at my old AMD 2600+ system here, no case in bits sitting on my testbench and it's quiet as. No VGA cooler, and a nice quiet CPU cooler + fanless northbridge cooler.

The computer I'm typing this on is an AMD X2 4400+ with 8600 GT in a Sonata III and it's so much louder!

I don't overclock, though I play the odd game - I just need a cooler with comparable performance to the stock cooler, but quiet and reliable.

Upon looking, Zalman came up (of course) but I'm sure there's something out there cheaper. Arctic Cooling HSF comes recommended, and I found this:

Looks good to me.

Any recommendations out there? Anybody got a cooler for their AMD AM2 system that they're happy with for silence and reasonable performance?

Thanks!

for exceptionally quiet cooling AND cooling you really can't go past the Zalmans HSF's alot of other company's are putting out "silent" cooling products but it's a massive trade off for cooling performance.

you could also consider water cooling :P

Are you sure the noise can be attributed to your CPU cooler.
Make sure that the noise isn't coming from PSU or case fans before you jump into buying an expensive cooling solution.
Arctic cooling make fantastic price to performance coolers at reasonable low noise levels or if cost is no issue then go a thermalright with scythe s-flex fan.

theres a guy in this trademart thread selling a decent thermalright cooler on the cheap http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=5&c=2&t=18480
might be worth checking it out :) otherwise the xigmatek ones are alright for the price but i would never buy one as most of them use the stock mounting design.
