How to test CPU to see if OK

I just purchased an AMD 9950 Quad Core off Ebay.

It was advertised as being New, tray only no box. The code number on the CPU is identical to the box version.

The plastic case which the CPU came in is unsealed.

There is a slight scuff mark on the centre of the top cover of the CPU, about 1sq cm.

I am having my doubts this is a new processor.

Is there any way I can quickly check/test the CPU in such a way that would tell me its new, or fucked?

I will need to know as I plan on opening a dispute.

EDIT: Its a 9950, not a 9550, typo...:-(

not that i know of unless you plug it in and run occt for a few hours, if you could take a few pics we could maybe see what your talking about with that scuff mark.

All CPU's are tested at the factory. So anyone at AMD using a heatsink to mount on the cpu, probably just didnt dismount it properly.. otherwise, there's nothing to worry. Enjoy your cpu.

The CPU came in a clear plastic fold-open shell not much larger than the size of CPU itself, with a bed of black foam...like they normally do when you take em out of the box.

The package was well wrapped and I have no reason to suspect it was damaged in transit.

The scuff mark looked to me like it had been used with a heatsink, hence my question. Other AMD CPU's I've bought, (this is my 4th for this PC) did not exhibit any such scuff marks.

Anyway, it seems to be working OK. I benchtested it with Supreme Commander Forged Alliance Perftest executable, which broke my 6400, 6000, and 5600 CPUS...the 9550 performed admirably with a 16,500+ score (which is quite reasonable for SupCom:FA)

CPU-Z reveals nothing out of the ordinary, not that I'd be able to tell. I haven't done any other benchies or overclocking yet.

So I guess I'll assume she's OK?

no CPU that I've ever bought has been 'blemish free' they all have scuff marks on the heat spreader. are there any traces of thermal goop? does it smell like metho, or iso-propyl alcohol?
all you can do is run it, to see if it's working, as far as I know, there's no way, barring visual inspection, of telling whether it's new or not.

Well, tray CPUs are like that. I'm pretty sure the scratches you're seeing is probably what's used on the CPU before. Besides, the integrated heatsink is designed to take some light punishment...

Sounds like it's ok.

Mind you no one should be selling Tray AMD CPU's direct.

Regardless tray or not, new CPU's should not have any scuff marks on the top. When there is it's often a sign a CPU is being sold at a higher rating then it's actually is. I'd be careful.

I'd personaly avoid tray CPU's as Boxed you know if they have tambered with the the box or has been opened. With tray CPU's you never know.

My brother bought his 9600 BE off ebay, and the packaging was all fine, completely unmolested... had not been removed from the box.

If it had been used or not, if you got it for a bargain price, and it works well... then you can't complain.

Oops, it is a 9950 (not 9550 as I said in original post - now edited)

Got it for AUD$315 off Ebay in US.

In communication with seller, he says its new, from the Box sold as a tray version, ie. no fan/heatsink manual etc. It has the same code as the box version.

I think its a good price if its new. If its been overclocked to the shithouse, then I am not so happy. THats why I was wondering if there was a way to tell if its new or not. The scuff marks, and unsealed plastic wrap and the cheapness got me suspicious...

If that's the case, then I'd be a bit wary. The reason is that these high-end CPUs are overclocked to the bejesus and back. When they're resold, then there may be some underlying issues...
