Hi,

I need to upgrade my old socket 478 Pentium 4 machine because the old CPU isn't doing it for me anymore. I only need to upgrade the CPU but i don't know which of the following is best:

3.4ghz Northwood core with 512kb L2

3.4ghz Prescott core with 1024kb L2

3.4ghz Gallatin core with 512kb L2 & 2048kb L3 (Unlocked multiplier)

Does 8kb vs 16kb L1 cache matter?

Thanks =)

how much is this costing you?

because I think you would better off going for something like this:
Of course if your using DDR400 you'll have to upgrade that as well.

CPU: E7200 - $145
mobo: G31M-S2L - $59
DDR2 800MHz Apacer 2x1GB - $49

$253 from MSY

That is what I would recommend.

Price doesn't matter because i can claim it on tax. I don't yet want or need to do a complete overhaul yet but thanks for pricing those for me =)

Can you tell me which of the CPUs is best?

That seems like the logical thing to do... more $$$ = better !!!

But by Intel slapping "Extreme Edition" on their CPU just allows them to slap some more $$$ onto something which isn't necessarily as !!! as the other two chips listed. Oh and !!! = performance =)

Any help?

what cpu do you have in it now? you may find the perfmance gain you need isnt worth the dollars.

im not a p4 expert either so sorry i cant answer your original question.

You can claim that other shit on tax too. but if I were to choose, it would have to be that nice little Gallatin core there! :)

It will be replacing my 2.2 northwood. The machine is just a spare old one of mine i use for video encoding and some code compiling when i program on it. Its not that slow that i can complain, it does most tasks pretty fast so i'm mostly happy with it, but i wouldn't mind an upgrade since i'm claiming it on tax. I havent been taxed enough for a whole new system but i don't need one for the few tasks i do on it anyway.

Sometimes my son uses it for his games so he might be happy with an upgrade to this machine too. He plays first person shooters like oblivion, stalker, half life series, fear and so on. The video card is an x850xt platinum.

So the extreme edition chip is best? btw i don't think it is unlocked mutlis after all..

Thanks! =)

If price is no issue, just get the 3.4ghz Gallatin core with 512kb L2 & 2048kb L3 ... it's got the most cache of the three.

The Gallitin core was based on Xeon CPU's and 130nm technology. Basically if you plan to overclock , you won't get very far. But of the 3, yes the EE is the best. The EE still performs very well. And it's an easy overclock to 3.6-3.8 just don't expect 4.0 on 130nm.

Yes I love my Netburst. Atomic's Netburst enthusiast haha. :D

Haha just the guy i need =)

Ok so the EE is best. Which comes into second place? Northwood 512kb/3.4ghz or Prescott 1024kb/3.4ghz ?

I don't know much about northwood vs prescott but i heard prescott runs hotter, overclocks better being 90nm (i don't overclock), has a larger L2, and overall i have no clue which would be better...?

Thanks =)

I loved my P4 Northwood - it overclocked like a demon! 2.6G @ 3.6G Prime stable on air.

The next best is actually the Northwood if you are not overclocking. It has a wayyy shorter pipeline and was once the best CPU you could get on the market. And when Prescott came, it just wasn't efficient anymore. However Prescott is made on 90nm and overclocks the best of all 3 chips. It does have high heat output though...

Best upgrade option is 'GO TO CORE2' and not to waste money on old stuff. Just my 2c's

Why would he go to Core 2 if he just moved out of the processing power of a 2.2GHz P4? 3.4GHz EE's will provide enough speed for him most likely.

Moving to Core 2 will bring him a lot more costs and as he said, he can claim the cost of the CPU.
