Is the thermalright 120 ultra extreme + 120mm fan the top dog when it comes to CPU cooling? or has something better finally jumped in to take its place?

Jack.

in the case, anything will do you fine, lol, stick a piece of metal on the cpu, and let the gentle breeze of norway do the rest. :)

Yup, still the top dog.

Though the black edition of that cooler is rumoured to be 1 degree better, but it's all much of a muchness really :)

Go for a good Scythe fan if you can source one in Norway.

What a waste of space that gemini is. It'd be more useful as a blunt weapon for hitting people who make such stupid things

Noctua NH-U12P $79 with fan

Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme $65
fans
Arctic Cooling 120mm Fan AF12025 PWM $13.80
Scythe S-FLEX 120mm 1600-1900rpm SFF21G $25
Scythe Ultra Kaze 120mm 2000-3000rpm $21.50

the true will flog the noctua with any of these fans but obviously make more noise
the s-flex bearing fans can be extremely quiet if you slow it down a bit

Yeah of course the s-flex fans are quiet if you turn them down, which still means your spending more money on a HSF that will perform at the same level (noise & heat) to the Noctua. The Noctua is the quieter and cheaper product. And its mounting is better

the true is cheaper if you use the arctic cooling fan which isnt just a cheap fan its decent value

http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&number=5&artpage=3258&articID=680
this review shows the true to be 4.5c cooler than the noctua
but they were using this fan

GlobalWin NCB
Dimension 120 x 120 x 25mm
Fan Speed 1300 RPM
Air Delivery 41.70 CFM
Noise 19 dBA

the noctua is made to work well with its own fan just as the true is made to work best with higher speed fans

one thing i have against the noctua
some reviews suggest its rather loud and has an annoying jet engine like drone for a fan thats only doing 1300rpm

I've got the Noctua running right now at full speed and the only noise i hear is my hard drives doing there work! Theres no jet engine type noise or anything even close.
