Yup, just a lil bit.

Hey I managed to get my Q6700 to 3.7 GHz today.
Never been able to get it to Boot past 3.66 GHz
But I tried a 9x Multi instead of 10. and linked and synced the RAM at 800. and it worked fine. I wonder if the higher Multi's are less stable. cuz if so then a QX woulnd't do me any good. and if the lower ones work better. a Q9550 would work great for me.

Oh and I also looked up some Q9550's and i found a group of guys all with my board. the 750i. and they all were over 3.8 GHz and one was on 4.1 GHz with Air. He had his eVGA 750i fsb to 470.. and I've heard Quads wont get mobo's past 450 very easily. so that makes me feel like i could do ok.

if you're stable at 3.7ghz 24/7.. don't bother upgrading at all. stick with that cpu man

well It wasn't 24/7 3.7 GHz got a blue in about 10 mins. so I upped the vcore a lil bit and it worked for a few hours. but when I tried to run Prime it did something I've never seen it do. got a bunch of weird errors I've never seen. they started happening so fast. and usually whatever core gets a error, it stops and shows error once. but this time it kept saying it and saying it, so the screen got covered with it. then the second core started doing it. so I freaked out and closed Prime. so I'm not sure what the error actually was. but it was NOT a rounding error, thats for sure. So I'm going to have to say NEH on the 24/7 but I guess I could try loosening my timings, and giving it a lil more vcore. as I hit 3.7 GHz with 1.4812 volts in BIOS. and it went even lower under CPU-Z and showed 1.456v. most people I see at those speeds are going with 1.5 and beyond... does 3.7 GHz at that volts sound ok?

I'd would get the QX6850 and sell it for profit. Go for the newer stuff.
It's native 1333MHz FSB, it's got 12MB cache, it's 45nm, it runs cooler and uses less powe, and your 750i supports it.The QX6850 is 3GHz at stock and bangs out 130w heat, the Q9550 is 2.83GHz and puts out 95w heat.
For $1415 NZD I can get a QX6850 new for a Q9550 I'd pay $559 NZD.

Get the QX6850 and sell it.

lol yup, you make a good point.. but it's an Extreme, and unlocked Multi's. but I think I'm going to get it, and sell it. then get a Q9550. thats my plan i think.

I still have a dual core, and you can't decide which quad core you want!!!

It's not fair :(

what FBB, the Quad or the AMD Dual..?

and yea Nesquick it's actually already out, the ONLY difference from it and the Q9550, is the same as it's difference from the Q9450,

Q9450 2.66 GHz with 8 Multiplier $305.00 USD
Q9550 2.83 GHz with 8.5 Multi $310.00 USD
Q9650 3.0 GHz with 9 Multi $549.00 USD

the Q9650 is just slightly newer, only difference is the 9 Multi. and they are charging up the ass $200 more for that. although thats the way the Q9550 was when it first came out.

It will drop soon enough, when they get closer to i7, but I might as well go for the middle, the Q9450 is just to low with only an 8 Multi

as you already know xguntherc, anything over 3.4ghz is all for bragging and benchmark uberness.. as speed like 4ghz is pointless for most things computer can do, lol. not sure how much more fps one can get out of modern pc games with that speed when you have something like GTX280 or 4870x2 video cards. but then again, who knows. I'm using Q9550 stock speed with 4870x2 vid and atm I havent found anything I am running need more speed. maybe except for reading my emails, I think I need 4ghz to open winmail faster (not quite instant enough) but thats about it. :)

you would find that card is being staved of bandwidth ie: if you ran your cpu at 3.8ghz you would probably see about a 25% increase in fps

mmm, tough decision.

There is a point to be had with the IPC improvement going from kentsfield to yorkfield. If you assume 5% improvement the Q9550 at 3.8GHz will be about equal to the QX6850 at 4GHz. Q9550 @ 3.9GHz would roughly equate to QX9650 @ 4.1GHz.

My Q9550 hits a fsb wall around the 460MHz mark for 3.91GHz.

So for the QX6850 to be the better option you have to be certain it can clock past 4 to 4.1GHz to be the better option.

Plus there's the power saving factor of the 45nm Q9550.

Erm, you said the quad was going in another machine. I'd really take any CPU, TBH, seeing as mine is gonna be out of commission for a while :-(

why is yours going to be out of commission for a while.

and mark, thats some good info, thanks. Yea I've got my current Q6700 to 3.7 GHz. and i'm pretty sure I can possibly hit 4.1 GHz on a QX. but the temps would probably be an issue at that speed.. so maybe the Q9550 would be a better option there.
