Phenom FX-82 to run at 4.4GHz stock?

There are some reports around the net though with the engineering samples reaching 4ghz, but at high temperatures (50+) so nothing like that would be released stock.

We will be seeing a maximum of 3.0ghz coming January 2009 along with the other Phenom's. Reviewage looks like some cheap review site started up by a 16 year old, and there is no chance AMD would give them an engineering sample anyway.

If however AMD does pull this off it will be deja vu all over again,
AMD did exactly this with the launch of the Athlon 64, no one suspected it and they came out with guns firing and completely owned Intel.

Fixed. It was the original Slot A Athlon that started the brutal assault on Intel, starting with Katmai.

Athlon XP and Athlon 64 were just the continued raping of poor old Intel's Northwood and Prescott.

AMD's real start was K62 for socket 7 which introduced 3DNow, which was way better for games then MMX. That said they've been making CPU's since x86 days.

Yep way back in the seventies they were playing with their own reverse engineered X86 proc's from Intel. Then in the eighties signed a contract to make Intel processors for them, but then started to make their own and sell them. So Intel cancelled the agreement and wouldn't let them have the details for the i386 processor. AMD challenged the decision which lead to an 8 year supreme court battle which AMD finally won in 1994 and then on their own finally they made their very own X86 without influence from Intel. and it was called 'K5' then 3 years later they released K6 (1997), and only 2 years later released K7 (1999)which was branded 'Athlon'. AthlonXP in 2001, then the AthlonXP with 512k L2 in 2003, it was also this year that AMD released the AMD64 architecture in their server based Opteron processor.

There's a little history for ya!

Yeah, I'm a bit sceptical, too.

I too would kind of like to see AMD release something without much forewarning that'll just mop the floor.

BAM! Take that, fux0r!

Or better yet, I'd be amused if some no-name company entered the CPU field with a competition killing debut. Unfortunately the fabrication process isn't something any old company can jump into, so this isn't hugely likely and becomes less and less probable as time goes by. Perhaps we'll see this post 32nm CPUs, when we start seeing a shift to new chip making methods.

Your right about that, AMD started off in 1969, and only really started to make a name for the selves in the late nineties.

perhaps VIA will make some super dooper CPU that decimates all, but I doubt it in the extremes :)

I also hope that AMD produce a Kentsfield Killer. Something that will put them back in the top of the market for a bit.

Here's more news
http://news.softpedia.com/news/AMD-Ready-To-Roll-Out-the-FX-80-and-FX-90-Series-57366.shtml

The Phenom and Phenom FX series will probably come out in November (1S FX series) and December (2S FX series). That is if we were to speak "officially". The first Phenom FX series will be 1S FX-80 clocked at 2.2-2.4GHz. Soon a 2S FX-90 clocked at the same speeds will follow and at about the same time AMD will also roll out its fastest FX CPU, the FX-91 clocked at 2.4-2.6GHz.

(So no 3Ghz)

is it worth it to have that much multiplier when your FSB is still that low? i still go for the othe brand. i think i could have much better benchmark at high FSB.

There is no 'FSB' technology used in current AMD CPUs since the K8 onwards.

Intel are also ditching FSB from Nehelam onwards.

Aren't Softopedia articles written by members?

I don't think we can verify the accuracy of that article. And I think we will see more like this as time goes on. If Only AMD actually released information instead of playing things 'close to the chest' then we might know the truth about now.

We need to keep this thread open I think... keep the updates coming.

At least that article seems to give new facts/supposed info out about the new chippies instead of hyperbole about insane multipliers.

AMD behave like Apple with their new releases, let the market just speculate like crazy.

im not sure if anyone has seen it but there is a rather interesting engineering sample review at hardspell
http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hardspell.com%2Fdoc%2Fhard%2F79405.htm&a
looks like they have got their power draw down quiet a lot but there are only small increases in cpu processing power although it is only an engineering sample so who knows :)

Someone mentioned about fsb etc. I have found that when you drop the multiplier and increase fsb and overclock to a set level eg 3.5ghz it is around the same performance in benchmarking as just increasing the multiplier higher to achieve the same 3.5ghz. Atleast in gaming benchmarks it is.

In system overall performance yes it should be better to have a fatter pipeline for the fsb, but that is negligable as most midrange desktop pcs these days you would be hard pressed to tell the difference in windows speeds, its when your gaming etc you notice the extra grunt.

So by amd having a high multiplier I dont think it would be detrimental to performance overall.

I for one would love to see some kickarse cpu's come out from the amd camp, for if they go and leave intel the market then woohaaar we would be back to the bad ole days of intel monopoly pricing, ooh I cringe.

And besides that AMD doesn't need to be bought. It's Graphics line is starting to pick up... and making profit. Their new Motherboard chipset is out. They have a complete platform to offer OEM manufacturer's for gaming systems out of the box(AMD GAME). And their new 45nm CPU line up is due to be released soon.

Not to mention that their Share price has increased, from 5.14 a few months ago, to 5.96 now.... so they are slowly crawling back up... so why would they sell out?
