Intel have decided to brand Nehalem with a new name “Core i7″. That means no matter Bloomfield, Lynnfield, or Havendale will officially get their name.

There will be 3 Bloomfield to enter PC market later this year, and the 999USD top-of-the-line Bloomfield is the only Core i7 Extreme Edition processor current revealed.

All i7 processors and i7 Extreme Edition processor will be officially announced in Aug 11st, launch date set to Q4 this year.

1-Pentium
2-Pentium 2
3-Pentium 3
4-Pentium 4
5-Conroe
6-Penryn
7-Nehalem?

And the i stands for Intel I presume.

That was only a guess though, no evidence. Cool logos though :)

It's retro I think ...

The Pentium replaced the i486 when it should have been called the i586. The Pentium oddly went to the P4 when the P4 got replaced by the current Core and Core 2 duos/quads.

So the Pentiums to P4 are i586 and the current C2D/C2Qs are i686 ... hence the new chips are i786 or i7.

I like the naming, it feels quite stylish. Hope it'll actually bring a revolution to the computing world..

Yeah, I suppose and it does feel like Apple styled stuff.. But it was called i368 etc, so I don't see how having an "i" in front of something makes it Apple.

well if anything Intel should be able to put an 'i' infront of their products on the pure basis that their name starts with an I!

unlike apple, it should be called apod, amac, atune. lol =P

kinda funky naming from intel but i personally prefer Nehalem, sounds more exotic, like "wooo whats that?!" something that will perk your interests if didn't know it was an intel product.

i think for the average consumer 'i7' you would think something apple or something electronic.

We had a pleasant meeting with a nice chap from Intel that told us the story of the Nehalem brand. As you should probably know by now, the Nehalem Bloomfield desktop CPU will end up branded as Core i7.

Intel explained that Core brand was very well accepted but at the same time, Intel had too many variables, such as Core 2, Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Extreme and so on. It was too confusing and therefore Intel simply decided to keep Core.

The letter i and number 7 are there mainly for phonetical reasons, Core i7 as a whole sounds and pronounces good. The small "i" doesn't actually stand for anything, explains Intel. Even the number 7 doesn't mean its the seventh generation processor, it is just a number.

This might give you an idea that future Nehalems might end up branded as Core i6, Core i5 and so on, but this is not something Intel wanted to talk about. Intel simply hopes that this will get things a bit more simpler than it was. So, now you know.

There you go, doesn't mean anything specifically.

i believe "nehalem" is the codename for the core i7 chips like bloomfield, wolfdale etc. and "core i7" is the branded name the face of the chip.

Nah, i686 was Pentium pro/PII/PIII aka P6, i786/P68/Netburt was Pentium 4, core is i886. Going by old school names.
