i have read plenty on the net. Both are good. i will be buying a new cpu(e8440 or q6600), and 2gig of 800mhz tomorrow

But i dont know what cpu to buy. my local comp place has a q6600 in stock. i dont know whether to wait till they get e8400 in stock or get q6600

i will be mainly using computer for games like Crysis and COD4

Short answer E8400 longer answer Q6600. The E8400 will get you bigger and more stable overclocks which will get you more out of your 8800GT but the Q6600 will give you a bit more longevity. You'll get 4ghz out of an E8400 easily enough, you'll only get 3.2ghz out of a Q6600 fairly easily.

In the here and now the E8400 wins, but in a few years time quad core might pay you back with abit more longevity

How does the e8400 compare with the e8500 is the former a better cpu to overclock?I saw these upgrade kits on ebay what do you think?

That board is really not what you want and you'll struggle to fit a full sized card on one... note the cap next the the PCIEx16 yeah its in a really bad position.

That board also doesn't have crossfire and only has 1 full speed PCI-E slot.

The board to get at the moment is the Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3 if like you you want to go with a HD4870x2 unless you want to go crossfire later then you want the Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4

The E8500 is $20 more and gets you 3.16ghz and a slightly higher multiplier from what i've been hearing

put it this way you can get an X48 and an E8500 for $450 so that's not that great of a deal at all

Intel ATX E8500 CORE 2 DUO/3.16GHz/6MB/1333FSB/LGA775 $213.00
Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4 S775 X48 FSB1600 DDR2 2xPCIE2.0 RAID 2xGbLAN 1394a $243.00
Total $456.00

Thanks for that Cpt.Lock.Your right those upgrade kits arent very good.Im still a bit undecided weather i should go for the HD4870x2 or the GTX280,i think the 280 price's will drop some more next week and it could be a good option for SLI later on.what is the highest stable speed Do you think the e8400 or e8500 could be overclocked to?

An E8400 will hit 4ghz on air without to much trouble, the E8500 i've seen has hit 4.5ghz they're fairly new though and I haven't heard what they're fully capable of.

The HD4870x2 is going to be a quicker card then the GTX280, i'd stay with ATi for the moment plus to get a really nice DDRIII setup with SLi and a nvidia card you really have to go with the nforce 790i

Now number 1 that's a really expensive board, and number 2 is that it really isn't very stable. Nvidias intel offerings really have a lot of data corruption issues.

ATi is really the safer bet plus if you really go nuts you can pick up another HD4870 in crossfire or grab another HD4870x2 and go quad crossfire. That's a little silly though

The best bang for buck in a dual card setup is really the HD4870x2 and reports are that it will have 2GB of GDDR5

Your best option if you really must go DDRIII at the moment is to grab a gigabyte X48 motherboard, and HD4870x2 when they come out the X48 has 2 16x PCI-E slots so you can drop in another card later in crossfire.

That said DDRIII is really expensive right now, and unless you've got a hole burning in your pocket I'd suggest that you just go DDRII

You can get the same chipset options with DDRII ram and for the time being its the best bang for buck. The only advantage to DDR III that I can see at the moment is that it allows you to take your RAM with you when you upgrade and it's one less hassle of buying new when Nehalem/Bulldozer come out

Those temps aren't high ... my Opteron 165 is always around 50C (with the fan at %100 perenially because AMD CnQ is pain to set-up). My laptop's Merom T5600 runs around 40C upto 55C at full load.

the E8400 is a great CPU, mine runs @ 3.84G 24/7 (12 hours ORTHOS) - but I'd probably get the E8500 if I was buying now, just for the higher multiplier. you'll be pretty happy with either CPU, I'd reckon.

possibly faulty. that's a huge discrepancy. you'd think some of that heat would go to core 2. my Q6600 runs around 37-38 at idle in all cores.
right now I'm playing wow and it's sitting at round 45 degress. with 50% work load.

there's a 2-3c difference in my 2x cores at idle - that's about normal, I believe.....30c ain't normal
