Discuss: AMD G34 revealed

Here's to shedding a bit more light on the K10 successor

AMD wants to leave the Barcelona (rather K10) debacle behind it as it moves closer to a newer processor architecture. This paves way for AMD to incorporate strong memory and system interface links. The G34 socket though touted to be a successor for the current socket 1207, is believed to be a standard socket for both enterprise and PC processors. AMD is working on a new CPU architecture codenamed 'Bulldozer'. Derivatives include monolithic 8-core and 12-core processors. The 12-core processor is now codenamed Magny-Cours, the 8-core part is called Sao Paulo. These processors could feature four parallel HyperTransport 3.0 interconnects, upto 12 MB of L3 cache and 512 KB L2 cache per core. It's known that AMD could be working on quad-channel DDR3 (both registered DDR3 under G3MX and unregistered). Socket G34 seems to have 1,974 pins.

The provision of four independent HyperTransport interconnects means that the fourth interconnect can be dedicated as a peer-to-peer interconnect between two sockets in a dual-socket setup, or its bandwidth split to form daisy-chains with multiple sockets. A prelude to AMD's Torrenza enterprise platform, which would allow use of several co-processors of different architectures including ClearSpeed to be embedded in workstations.

Cool.

I do know that part of this torrenza program that IBM will be making their Power-7 which is an 8-core processor clocked at 4GHz to fit the same socket and be totally compatible with Opteron boards. So perhaps this super chip will be first introduced on this so-called G34. And I do believe Bulldozer will have a 16-core variant as well. Hopefully this won't be a case of too little too late, as Nehalem will have made quite an impact before this chip is even tested by partners and reviewers.

Exciting stuff, and thanks for sharing it Cpt. Lock.

The main thing Im interested in about Bulldozer of course is it's new SSE5 instructions. Otherwise known as fuse threading, which takes a single threaded applications and instead of using just one core it unites the other cores to process it as well. Essentially making a single core almost (but not quite).

I saw a schematic for that socket a while back, probably about two or so weeks.

Looks very interesting, and quite elongated for a CPU.

Sixteen cores should provide worthy competition for the multithreaded 8 cores of Nehalem, assuming they can do them cheap enough.

Looks like the Phenom is going have the same lifespan as Socket 939 series, which won't please current owners.

Interesting.

Thanks for sharing.

Quad channel DDR3 sounds good to me

bulldozer is not out till 2009 so expect it around q2 i would imagine as amd will move to 45nm first then to their new architecture to save money.

Nah Bulldozer will be Q4 2009 if not slip into Q1 2010.

The socket looks cool, reminds me of the transition from 4:3 telivisions to 16:9 :P

the new windows will probably be out by then so we may see computing take a very big step forward.

Windows 7 from what I understand won't be a totally multi-threaded OS, Microsoft have only just recently started initiatives towards total multi-threading. Also from what I understand, is Bulldozer eliminates multi-threading at the software level, and does it at the hardware level... so the current design of applications and other various software may not have to change... and then Intel may be the ones left behind!

:P
