A challenger appears, trying to catch the competition Red faced?

A possible new entry into the DSLR arena?

Via:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/30/reds-next-move-monstro-dslrs/

Red CEO, Jim Jannard, is stirring up trouble in the RED User forums, J. Wong-style. His latest volley discusses the new Mysterium "Monstro" sensor program, the next evolution (and future free upgrade) to the Mysterium X sensor slated for RED's 5k Epic. The most interesting revelation though is this little nugget: in addition to Epic, RED plans to place Monstro into, "another camera aimed squarely at the DSLR market." He later adds, "Future cameras will shoot ultra-high resolution stills and motion..." Now, considering that the second generation, full-frame, ~25 megapixel Mysterium X is already a serious challenge to 35mm film, we can only imagine what this DSLR with a third generation RED sensor might offer. Hear that Nikon? Your D90 is just the beginning of this story. Let's just hope that televisions and monitors, already struggling to reach 4k, Quad HD can keep pace.

Very very interesting. Though I don't really see it trickling down into the typical consumers grasp, ala D60/D90/1000D/450D/50D.

Damn I'm loving browsing the rumor sites. Words of 21MP on the 5DII being the go, a Nikon rangefinder/medium format possibly in the work, Zeiss coming up with a new mount (Alright, that's not a rumor, that's fact, but still exciting!), dear oh dear bring on Photokina! I really want to find out what the other full frame camera Canon has is!
Rumors - More fun than the real thing :)~

Red is exciting esp if they offer a Canon mount like Kodak did with their crappy DCS (Nikon and Canon mount variants).

Red sensor has 11 stops of exposure latitude.

25 megapixels and 11 stops is a serious challenge to MF, 35mm film cant live up to that (1Ds Mark III for example).

Also google visionresearch's Phantom65 (Medium Format Video camera) and Phantom35 (35mm video camera - 1000 fps).

if its using the red video camera mount, you can get a third party EOS adapter for about $600-$800 I think.

FD and Nikon adpaters exist too directly from Red I think.

Oh and I forgot to request a Canon lens mount for it, or better yet, make it a rangefinder style and have it take Leica lenses... oh, and cost $100 and run on a fuel cell or nuclear power, um, and make milkshakes.

God

This is why I hate Engadget and refuse to follow links to it. They manage to write the tiniest snippet of information from a press release into an article that is littered with proof that they have no idea what they are talking about.

No mention of codecs, no understanding of the SMPTE standards that will keep 1080p here for at least two decades, no concept of Red's business model, no understanding of the telecine process or that 2K is more often than not the film output standard.

Wankers, the lot of them. It reads like they're holding their cocks while writing.

Fair enough.

Will a link direct to Jannard's post ease your anger a tad? :)~

(Doesn't really add a great deal more, and it could just be hot air and plans for something far far off. Interesting but)
