What does $300 get you?

So at the moment it looks like I might be going overseas at the end of the year and - of course - a camera is a must.

I would guess that at the moment I would be taking my old man's Sony. Can't quite recall the model, but its a POS super-slim jobie, and I've never been terribly impressed with the photos it churns out.

(I think it's an older gen of http://www.sony.com.au/dis/catalog/product.jsp?categoryId=34410 , with the slide-down lens cover)

(Close to this one http://www.ireviewelectronics.com/images/sony-cybershot-dsc-t7.jpg )

So I'm curious, what type of cameras would I be looking at for $300?

Rob.

fliptopia: Depends which side you're cutting off, doesn't it? :P

Okay, so two suggestions so far. I'm a total and utter camera noob (I have a slight understanding of f-stops, but I guess that's not relevant here :P).

Am I likely to benefit from an Ixus/S8000fd over the Sony? Or rather, generally, how do they improve on the Sony?

Rob.

The sony is pretty lousy next to the S8000fd

the S8000fd has super telephoto AND wide angle for landscapes to wild life, and its stabilised too, its 18x zoom lens.

http://www.photoreview.com.au/Fujifilm/reviews/advanced/fujifilm-finepix-s8000fd.aspx

apparently its not on sale anymore there, as even when my mum got it (i found it for her) it was superseded by the s8100fd

using staticice (how i foudn the one on quikshop) its $399, instead of $300 including postage :/

s8100fd is $419.

http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod2687.htm

edit: you can get the fuji s1000fd for $300, and even that > than any $300 sony. 12x optical zoom lens, thats still decently wide to super tele.

Vanbar still have a Fuji s6500fd on their clearence page. model has been superseeded by the s100fs. 6.1mp, but very clean, noise free images with decent tonal range. Lens is quite sharp too, and has either full auto mode, or twist barrel manual focus like a dslr.

Is that $300 for just the camera alone, or do we also have to factor in memory card(s), camera bag etc.?

Depending on what you want to get out of the camera, I'm inclined to say something from the Canon Ixus range as they are decent point and shoot cameras.

I have a Fujifilm s8000fd and it is a fucking excellent little camera. Cost me just over $300 but it's little brother (S5-somethingorother) usually goes for under 300.

Alot of advanced features but it also goes well on the 'auto' setting for chumps who don't know anything about photography.

It is by far the best camera I know of in that price range. Don't get me wrong, it's no EOS, but for $300 it's a hoot. A fantastic all-rounder.

300 bucks could get you a hooker for the night and maybe a couple of doughnuts ;P

Na.

I have a FUJIFILM < $189 (8.2 Mega Pixel, video, 4x zoom lenz) Pretty decent, I have one and what's to say you can record video rather than pictures? pretty handy for a vacation.

+1 for the Fuji

I've got an S9500 and it's great (although if I'd held out a couple of years I could have got an EOS for only a little more, but I needed the camera then and there). The S-series from Fuji are great allround though if you don't mind the extra bulk.

Personally, I think if you traveling overseas, it's worth the extra bulk for better quality pictures. It's not like these are birthday party photos your talking about.

If you absolutely had to go something slim though, Ixus's (or Ixii?) are great. I picked up an Ixus 70 dirt cheap from a Tandy closing down sale ($100 for a mint demo that had been locked in a cabinet), and it's a great camera.

Hey guys, sorry for my absense, I got rather distracted this week. Thanks to a very nice mod ex-mod (:P) for PM'ing me and reminding me.

I think I might spend some time rephrasing the question. I'm most likely going to be heading overseas at the end of the year, and of course would like to take a camera.

The current plan is to take my old man's Sony Cybershot T7 ( http://www.steves-digicams.com/2005_reviews/t7.html ).

Thing is, I currently have $300 which I was planning to buy some harddrives with. However, it just occured to me that perhaps it might be worthwhile to get a camera for overseas instead of the T7.

So my question is kind of along the lines of - what will $300 get me compared to the T7? Will it get me a decent upgrade, or will it be neither-here-neither-there?

$300 includes carry case (doesn't have to be anything special) and at least a little memory (I will likely be carrying an eeePC with me anyways).

As for size - I'm not quite sure. Depends what is out there.

Rob.

the general consensus of reader opinions on dpreview seems to be the cybershot t7 is more of a handbag accessory than a camera, being well built and very good looking, but lacking in image quality. for $300 you could do much better, given how good some current discontinued and second hand 'prosumer' models are. have a look at officeworks, they have a father's day sale on, some decent prices in there. do keep in mind total cost however, if you're going overseas you're probably going to want an 8 or 16gb card if you don't have a laptop, and are staying for a while. some cameras can't even support this amount of memory.

Any of the Fuji S6500, S1000, or S8000 mentioned by a few of us.

These will all be highly satisfactory in terms of lens reach and image quality.

Any of these will be far superior to that sony. For that price you'll be looking at the S6500 I'm pretty sure.

I do appreciate all the input, but I'm still curious to know how these cameras are better (I have no doubt they are :P).

My conundrum is that I'll go to a store, look at a camera, but not really know what I'm looking at and how to compare it to other cameras.
