Pentax uses Pentax bayonet lenses.

You can get Sigma and Tamron lenses for Pentax.

You can use old film pentax bayonet lenses without any adapting (and they'll have stabilisation).

You can adapt M42 screw mount lenses for Pentax too.

damn I cant use my old Nikon lense's.

I would like to be able to adapt either Nikon F to Pentax K mount ( for the said Pentax model) So far, not much luck in finding such a critter. One of you experts help me out here. Sounds like a maniacal engineering problem to me. Now to sit here and suck my thumb for a while.

You can mount F mount lenses straight onto any Nikon digital SLR, however they suck on Nikon cameras (the least expensive ones anyway), because of lack of exposure metering (aperture priority metering - automatic exposure).

Ive adapted Nikon F to Canon, no problems, exposure metering intact.

You can adapt F mount to Pentax AFAIK, because M42 doesn't adapt to Nikon with infinite focus, but does to Pentax, therefore, there's enough difference in the film plane/sensor plane to body mount to allow for a physical ring adapter with infinite focus... brb ill look it up for Pentax K.

edit: okay there is a 1mm diff between Nikon F and Pentax K in Pentax's favour - very hard to make an adapter, it'd be expensive.

My recommendation is Olympus or Canon for adapting. (on Olympus you'll get image stabilisation with the adapted lenses).

Nikon lenses are generally worth adapting as they are very high quality, unless they're trash lenses.

What lenses are they?

After a length discussion on msn with you, my recommendation is now the K200D+18-55 most likely.. or a tamron of which ill have to look up to remember, with camera armour.

The Nikon lens he has is the 28-80 3.3-5.6g AF

the ting is and im sure many people can say this is that you collect lenses and swap bodies. I dont want to be stuck with a camera that dosent put out great lenses like nikon.

gir.
I use a pentax K100 and I like it.
the only reason I want to move to canon or nikon is because I want a full frame camera for landscapes.

There isn't anything wrong with the pentax lenses, and even if there was you can just go to sigma or tamron who make pretty decent lenses for canon, nikon, pentax and probably more.

Luckily for you the K200D can come in kits with diff lenses bundled which pull the price down a little, all the prices here under $1k (except with the gigantor 18-250mm)

http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/category149_1.htm

Sigma 18-50mm
http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/317-sigma-af-18-50mm-f35-56-dc-test-report--review?start=1

Sigma 70-300mm (mixed bag of results with this one)
http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/326-sigma-af-70-300mm-f4-56-apo-dg-macro-test-report--review?st

Pentax 16-45mm (Excellent lens)
http://www.photozone.de/pentax/134-pentax-smc-da-16-45mm-f4-ed-al-review--test-report

Sigma 17-70mm (more reach than the 18-50 and 16-45)
http://www.photozone.de/pentax/147-sigma-af-17-70mm-f28-45-dc-pentax-k-review--test-report?start=

I wouldnt bother with the 18-200mm and 18-250mm, major optical compromises are made to produce a lens with that range -and- at those prices.

My personal choice out of that list is the 24-60mm, it has a constant f/2.8, the lens is quite sharp all the way through.

f/2.8 @ the long end where the others are all f/5.6 @ 50mm (and f/4 @ 45mm for the 16-45mm, well and f/4.5 for the 17-70mm)

f/2.8 is 4 times faster than f/5.6, which means if you gotta use ISO 1600 @ f/5.6 to get a reasonable shutter speed to be able to take a shot in low light, you can do it at ISO 400 f/2.8.

24mm is almost wide angle on the pentax though... tough choices..

Olympus also has a brilliant kit..

http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod4980.htm

There's a lot of choices, being a fan of Sigma lenses myself Id be looking at an Olympus and Pentax bodies, you can get a lot of third party lenses which are optical stunners, but a lot of them dont have stabilisation, with a pentax or olympus body that doesn't matter.

If you're looking at a full frame body in your future, then the question of "do i get olympus or pentax?" goes out the window.

This is an -old- Pentax film lens -
http://www.photozone.de/pentax/143-pentax-smc-k-135mm-f25-review--lab-test-report?start=1

These mount straight on without an adapter, you can get old pentax lenses from pawn shops and other places, if you see a Takumar lens for cheap? grab it! they are usually stunning quality, they also have quite good resale value on ebay!

I actually have this lens and use it on my 30D.

Pentax still make FA lenses, which are lenses that work both on film and digital SLRs with full coverage - this means the are full frame, a lot of FA lenses have been discontinued.. though there are new D-FA lenses, which are still full frame lenses.

Point is, there is a small chance that Pentax -may- put up a full frame competitor now that Nikon has entered the market, seeing as they already have modern lens designs to support it, they can revamp the FA lineup too.

Plus the Sigma DG and Tamron Di variants would work on it :)

A full frame with body stabilisation would be ace *thumbs up*

/me is just keen on the 300-800 f/5.6 with stabilisation

if you intend on getting a bunch of nikon lenses (AF ones) it'd be better to get a Nikon body.

Nothing wrong with the lenses you can get on Pentax, especially the older lenses.

All the bodies will give you the quality you want.

If you definately will be getting autofocus Nikkor lenses, then a Nikon body, non-autofocus Nikkor lenses - then a Canon or Olympus body.

As far as Nikkor lenses go, putting them on a non-full frame dSLR.. it is worth doing, -but- you wont get wide angle from any of them (unless youve got a 20mm or wider lens), 50mm turns into a great portrait lens (85mm and 135mm remain great portrait lenses too), macro lenses are amazing, 300mm+ lenses make great wild life lenses etc.

Nikkor AF ED glass (Even old stuff) can be worth thousands -per lens- depending on what it is, so you might wanna reconsider 'borrowing' your old man's glass depending on what exactly he has.

For example, on OCAU there is a Nikkor ED 15mm f/2.8 for sale, (old one) which has a resale value of over $2k, it has scratches on the front element, which shows up in the pic @ f/8 and above, current offers in their equiv trademart are at $500 - for a scratched one :P

Not getting them? I'd go with the Pentax.

This is off a third party 400mm f/6.3 K-mount lens i dont want -
http://www.photodan.com.au/hanimex400/pic.jpg
http://www.photodan.com.au/hanimex400/pic.jpg

It's not worth selling as Hanimex isn't an expensive brand, and it's got fungus (still takes decent pics), i got a Pentax 50mm f/2 got some fungus, but it's very sharp and retains its contrast.

i got a bunch of other K mount stuff i should look at.

little bit of processing in photoshop etc

Yeah, you'll only get AF on AF Nikkor lenses on a Nikon body, you can get AF-confirm on other bodies though.

Which is running the autofocus program, but using your hand as the AF-motor (you focus the lens, and one of the zones will light up red and beep when it gets focus).

edit: if you're basing your choice off the 28-80 lens alone.. it isn't a real expensive lens or anything to be worth making that kind of decision over.. when involving other lenses though.. is a different story.
