What style of camera?

DSLR (as in the bigger style cameras with interchangeable lenses?)

or a Point and Shoot?

Something that handles rough conditions, (waterproof and shockproof) would be the Olympus tough series...

http://www.olympus.com.au/component/option,com_product/id,16/task,category/Itemid,69/

The 1030SW can be had for around $500.

edit: apparently its the S3 Pro and up with the extended dynamic range.

In any case, a 350D or 400D body will go you $400 with plenty of room to import a good lens.

second hand d200's in the US are about $800 or so, D100's even cheaper.

This

S3 Pro, extended dynamic range.

MUCH better than any D100 or D200.

Uses Nikon mount for lenses (Nikkor, Sigma, Tamron).

A K200D has weather sealing, couple that with some camera armour and care (aka desiccant to fight back the humidity) and I'd say you shouldn't have gone too far wrong.

Gotta admit though, your widely differing conditions make it sound as though you shouldn't be scrimping. Reading your post makes one imagine National Geographic type travels, ones which beg for something a bit better. Unless of course you just happen to work in a sauna in Finland, then it'd be well explained ;)

I take my cameras every where i go, on the farm skiing. Hiking a mountain to the point that sweat penetrates your backpack and its still fucking cold out side. I want the best possible dslr that can take a beating.

Not that ill give it one but its not as sensative as a woman on " one of those days".

oh larger sensor size
so

10mp+ but the physical size of the sensor must be quite big ( i find this reduces the amount of noise, but im sure you already know this)

sounds like you want a full frame then. The EOS 5D starts at $2700.
don't think you'll be finding a decent quality one for $800

Actually I've seen it for $1650 but after shipping, duty, gst, currency conversion it ended up being AU$3,200. more expensive than ted's and jb

the prices i look at include all taxes bar duty.

You can wait for the next 90+ US cents to the dollar.

Shipping shouldnt be more than $100 or so, even with an agent like priceusa.com.au, should be even low as $40 if ordering from somewhere like adorama or B&H.

I dont see how duty could be over $1k.

The K200D is a 10MP camera. But honestly, you'd be stepping up from a P&S, which is typically going to be noisier than a DSLR.

Still concerned about noise? Consider getting yourself a Nikon D700.

If that's still not enough to convince you, then I feel that you're wanting much too much for $800.

5D is both cheaper and better for image quality and noise than the D700 and D3.

K200D is a fine camera.

Ath, I'm just going by the review on CameraLabs. To quote:

The image quality is excellent as you’d expect, matching the D3’s high sensitivity performance. Switch the D700 to its highest sensitivity and you’ll see noise speckles like any other camera, but you have to remind yourself this is now operating at a whopping 25600 ISO. Turn the D700 down to 1600 or even 3200 ISO – a point where most DSLRs are still delivering noisy or smeared images – and you’ll be greeted by remarkably clean and usable results. It really is an amazing experience to confidently shoot at such high ISOs knowing the result won’t be compromised.

But I wholeheartedly believe the K200D to be a damn tasty little fellow. Almost want one m'self actually :)~
