Your details with the domain name

I recently bought a domain and it just occurred to me, why do they have to release ALL your details along with your domain listing?

I always thought an email and name would be enough, but no. How about your phone number and exact address? What exactly is that needed for? So people who want your domain and send you letters as opposed to emails?

Makes me almost want to put something false in there.

I personally think this is retarded, and even more when they charge you just to hide it. But maybe i'm just ignorant and there are many good reasons why this is the case. Please do share =(

I think it's just one of those old protocols / policies that have been around since the internet was invented, and it's really hard to change now.

I can see the sense in GIVING that info, but as for publicly displaying it... i dunno.

Well they could at least offer us the choice to conceal our physical address. I just made up some crap and put it in there =/

I believe it dates back to when businesses would have domains.
.com is company after all, and to legally own a .com.au you need to be registered as a business with the same name as the domain.
So in their initial outlay, they might have seen it the same as business details (which upon registration are essentially public like your domain registration information)

Yep and its viewable by the public unless you pay $5 a year or something like that. A lot of domain companies actually do checks to see if the entered data is correct, so if you put your address like "210 gdkjgdfk gkdffduif" then they can legally cancel your domain. Its such a shit

Put in what you like, it does not have to be real.

An address you used to live, or a non existant unit number in a block, non existant phone number. They are not going to check it is valid, and if they do you still have 2 weeks or whatever to update your details.

Part of the inhumanity of the computer is that, once it is competently programmed and working smoothly, it is completely honest.

Yeh, as long as they give me a warning to fix it up, i'll do it.

I just feel paranoid that you have to put your address there. Stalker alert lol, not that anyone would want to stalk someone as boring as me, i'm kinda poor.

But i think my mouse is worth stealing =0

Thanks guys.
