i'm stumped :o(

i'm rebuilding a website at the moment, using the original site's content and the new logos that the company have provided me with. they are very keen to have their new logo integrated into the site - including it's new colours... after a couple of concepts (the first was rejected because they didn't like the colour!), they've provided me with a background they used in a recent powerpoint display and asked me if i can use something similar to it for the website's background.
here's where i'm at so far. they're very happy with the layout, just not the background/colours. http://www.thexman.net.nz/braiden/
and this is the background they'd like to have - http://www.thexman.net.nz/braiden/colourScheme.jpg

i just cannot make anything work, colour-wise, with what they're hoping for.
what would you guys do? throw it together using their background and hope nobody ever discovers it was you who did it? politely tell them they're colour-blind? decline to complete the job because it doesn't meet your own personal standard of workmanship?

there's a good reason why yellow websites are not very common - and it's not just because of visual accessibility issues...

Tell them that as a professional designer, it's not aesthetically pleasing, and will defeat the purpose of having their website: it will turn people away.

Tell them you can still do it if they like [and don't put your name to it!], but you'd rather come to a compromise.

and the trouble is, Girvo, i'm not a professional - so i can't blind them with qualifications or baffle them with science :o|

Can you tone down the yellow to a pale yellow?

Might look terrible, but if you can pick a nice shade it might work.

Show them something better.

Make a site the way they want it, and make another that's better, and explain to them why it's better.

It doesn't work all the time, sometimes people just have a hardon for their own ideas, and there's no way around that. Ultimately if that's what they want, then that's what they get.

This.

You've been doing this more than they have. Compared to them, you're a professional.
So try your best given the constraints they've given you (which may be because they're shit at life, or may be because they want to try and save money) then try your best given the aim of what they're trying to acheive.

Show them both, then explain why you think your own design is better.

If it's a big project and they're still being unreasonable - it's probably best to part. If it's small then it's up to your discretion whether or not you want to keep doing a job for someone who may or may not be insane =P

At the end of the day, it is the client that has to like the design, not you. Do your best with what they want, but I also like the idea of having an alternative to show them.

If they still want their ugly design, just leave your name off it if it concerns you. Then take their money and be happy.

Yeah I agree with the above.. I had a similar client that chose the worst looking design out of the lot of choices I gave them.

Swallow ur pride and give em what they want.
I had to.

My suggestion would to take the main gradient of that background image and roll with that as a base.

but instead of yellow to black do a yellow to brown.

saw the update..

So did they like the new version?

its still a little gold looking up top rather than yellow.
Or did they ask for that?

still waiting to hear back from them, moo...

but yeah, the gold is indirectly what they're wanting - ie, the site has to incorporate their new 'gentle giant' logo, which uses that shade of gold. that logo is also why i faded to black instead of dark bown (which i agree with you about, btw).

edit - they like it...
oh well, good thing it turned out to be not quite as bad as i feared.

You haven't done too badly there, I think the problem is that you need a third color to match in with the other two, or just use the yellow as the focus color.

it's a fucking tough one, but what you have done so far does work. If anything I would smooth out the gradient and make it lighter towards the bottom, everything just mooshed together in balck down there.

I reken you should add a white / grey background to the main content in the center, that will really bring things out.

Also make the menu fit inside the content, I know the effect your aiming for but it looks out of place when stretched. With those changes it should look good

i'm working on the gradient, Sonictail (in fact, the whole design is still getting minor tweaks), but they're not too keen on brown, which is what you get when you stop short of the black. i may still have to do some persuading, there...

um, i'm not sure quite what you're getting at when you say 'menu', F117? do you mean the main "products | services | about us | enquiries" bit at the top, or the panels on the 'products' page?

and cheers for the suggestions/support/etc, too, guys :o)
