.au domain?

Just wondering if someone could clarify for me..

I thought I read before I went OS (about 2 months ago) that the .au domain was being opened up so that a ABN was no longer required to register a .au domain name..

Can someone please verify this for me? I can find where I read this..

Thanks!

I wasn't under the impression that you ever needed an ABN, provided you could prove you had a strong case to use the domain.

You are correct though regarding recent loosening of the rules, however I think they only apply to transfers and sales of domains:

Basically the rules for .au domains are;

.com.au & .net.au - Requires ABN, domain name must match business name, or have substantial connection. Maybe abbreviated for example, or a product you sell.

.asn.au - Normally for incorporated associations, political parties, trade unions, sporting and special interest clubs. An ABN/ACN/ABRN or ARSN is not required.

.org.au - Normally for charities and non-profit organisations, An ABN/ACN/ABRN or ARSN is not required but prefered.

.id.au - Designed for individuals wants an aussie extension (.au) but don't have an ABN/ACN etc.
