OK. I've decided it's time to bite the bullet and put up a basic website.

I've found it hard to get info on the best way to go about this.

Ideally, I'd like a .com.au domain name (I've checked and the one I want is available) with an email address and a website associated with it.

https://www.crazydomains.com.au/domain_names/register.html
looks like a good place to register the name as far as price is concerned. Do I need DNS Hosting as well? This comes up as an option when signing up for it.

https://www.bluehost.com/index.html
looks like the goods as far as the actual web server is concerned. I am an audio engineer and musician, and would definitely want to be able to host large wav files (100Mb+), as well as being able to stream large amounts of audio, etc from the server. This is why the unlimited features are appealing to me.

Am I correct in assuming that I can register the name with crazydomains, and then use bluehosting for the actual web space?

If so, then how do I set it all up? I'm sorry but I've never done this before :/

Do the above companies seem like they'd be any good? Can anybody recommend alternatives?

Aaaaah, so many unknowns...

Yep, your assumptions are correct.

Step one; buy domain. Once you've bought it you should get a login that enables you to set the nameservers, which in this case will probably be ns1.bluehost.com and ns2.bluehost.com - but they'll tell you exactly what the nameservers are when you buy the hosting.

step 2; buy hosting. usually on applying for hosting they will ask for the domain name, and then at they end either in an email or on the final "congrats you now have this" page, they'll tell you nameservers.

step 3; set the nameservers on your domain to match the nameservers your host tells you.

step 4; wait between 1 and 48 hours. when you can type your domain into your browser and can see a bluehost parking page, you're ready to log into your (i'm guessing) CPanel account or other host-will-give-you-details control panel and add email accounts, etc.

From there you either upload a site using the FTP details they will also give you in an email, or use whatever sitebuilder thing they bundle with the package. Or, if it's CPanel, sometimes it comes with something called "Fantastico" which you can use to easily install a blog and go from there.

Edit: Looks like bluehost might use their own control panel, or they don't say what they're rebranding. You'll probably want to signup as a 'transfer' customer since you'll already have a .com.au domain.

Yeah, bluehost aren't as unlimited as they say they are. They have good performance though, which is why I use them.

Thanks Kythin for taking the time to give me some excellent info. Much appreciated.

AboodY, instead of just typing bullshit, would you care to actually explain??? Not very helpful at all.

Superfireydave, how can something be 'not as unlimited'? Surely it's unlimited or it's not? Good to hear that you're using them and liking them though. Are they unlimited enough to host large files like I need? Could I expect to have 100 x 100Mb downloads every month. I'm not expecting a lot of site traffic, mainly file downloads for clients.

What we are trying to say is that they say unlimited, but it isn't really.

Google could not call them up and move their site onto a $9.95/month plan.

Liken it to a car company saying their car has no top speed, and not giving you any real numbers to what it really would do.

I can guarantee you that if you start getting any serious traffic (which you're unlikely to do) they'll force you up to a bigger plan over claims of excess CPU or RAM usage... or something equally stupid.

I could not store 40 gig on their server. However, on an unlimited plan should I not be able to store 40TB?

The place you are buying the domains from does not make similar ridiculous claims: http://www.crazydomains.com.au/web_hosting/index.html

good point, moo.

as a rough rule of thumb;
'.com' and '.co.wherever' usually infers a commerecial site,
'.org' is an organisation (club, church, charity, etc),
'.ac' for universities,
'.gov' is obvious..., and so on.

however, for a site that doesn't fall into most of those, you're usually best off with a '.net' address.

I'm not sure that's true anymore. I haven't re-read the specifics but I got an email recently from planetdomain talking about how if you don't buy your businessname's domain now you wont be able to challenge a parker if they buy it anymore.

So if parkers can buy domains they previously couldn't, or would easily lose a challenge for, do they still need abn's?

edit: i mean with .com.au's, .com's are already like this.

You guys have been a great help - thanks :)

Even though bluehost isn't exactly unlimited, from their forums it seems that I'll end up with much better value bandwidth and storage than crazydomains.

Yeah the forms probably aren't up to the new code yet, or the thing I heard isn't in affect yet. You've got a planetdomain reseller account too right? Did you get an email saying "get yourbusiness.com.au now before the rules are relaxed soon!"?
